For those knowing the ERP Core dataset and the HMP method we developed, here is what applying the latter on the former gives! With single-trials estimates also of course :)
Figure 1A illustrates that HMP model as described in Weindel, van Maanen and Borst 2024. HMP assumes a sequence of neural events (i.e. topographies for EEG) that are recurring across trials from stimulus onset to response. An expectation maximisation algorithm is used to estimate the parameters (I.e. electrode contribution to each event and time distributions leading to each event from the preceding one) and the result is a probability of each event at any sample in the response time interval.
Figure 1B illustrates the application to 4 tasks from the ERP database by Kappenman et al. 2020. The oddball task shows the same sequence between frequent and rare except that in rare there is an additional event furiously resembling a P3. The Eriksen Flanker task shows the same sequence of 5 events except that in the incongruent condition the last two are shifted in time, suggesting conflict source in a late stage of the RT. The face discrimination task shows the same sequence across face stimuli vs other except a component around 170ms with a clear occipital negativity (N170!). Finally the word pair judgement task shows a clear frontal negativity at 400ms (N400!) As difference in the sequence between unrelated and related words.

Just finished giving a first two-day workshop on eeg for newcomers. github.com/GuillaumePec... Super nice! I'll redo it. Also the opportunity to highlight the importance of pre-registration, and the desire to work on a paper to explain why almost (if not) all eeg studies are exploratory, for now.

New paper, on a worrying trend in meta-science: the practice of anonymising datasets on, e.g., published articles. We argue that this is at odds with norms established in research synthesis, explore arguments for anonymisation, provide counterpoints, and demonstrate implications and epistemic costs.

A hypothesis developed based on the data is often more likely to be true, than if you had not used the data. The problem is not whether the hypothesis is true. The problem is the hypothesis was not severely tested. You can't *claim* it is true until you test it on new data.
