Some guy on Twitter made a point of announcing that thousands upon thousands of men are descended from rapists, and we women "aren't going to like it when [they] stop asking nicely." Which, you know, surprise surprise brother, but you're also not going to like it when we stop refusing nicely.
The painting titled Judith Beheading Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi. The painting portrays the moment that Judith beheads Holofernes, mid act of sawing his head off with a sword. Judith grasps his hair as he lies face up on his bed and cuts the sword across to behead him while blood spurts out of his neck. Another woman helps hold him down as he attempts to resist.

Notes: I used NIR H, J, and Y, assigning them to Red, Green, and Blue. I reconstructed the center slightly for H, J and Y filters as it was overexposed, and used VIS for details on the nebula. Additionally, I added a 15% of HSC G to enhance the outer regions only.

Hubble Sees a Star Set to Explode - From Goddard Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/j6gpDL
Floating at the center of this new Hubble image is a lidless purple eye, staring back at us through space. This ethereal object, known officially as [SBW2007] 1 but sometimes nicknamed SBW1, is a nebula with a giant star at its center. The star was originally twenty times more massive than our sun, and is now encased in a swirling ring of purple gas, the remains of the distant era when it cast off its outer layers via violent pulsations and winds.
But the star is not just any star; scientists say that it is destined to go supernova. Twenty-six years ago, another star with striking similarities went supernova — SN 1987A. Early Hubble images of SN 1987A show eerie similarities to SBW1. Both stars had identical rings of the same size and age, which were travelling at similar speeds; both were located in similar HII regions; and they had the same brightness. In this way SBW1 is a snapshot of SN1987a's appearance before it exploded, and unsurprisingly, astronomers love studying them together.
At a distance of more than 20 000 light-years it will be safe to watch when the supernova goes off. If we are very lucky it may happen in our own lifetimes.

i love that we got 4 new hubble images today and we still continue to get more after 35 years 🥹 hubble really is the little telescope that could!!!
Composite shows four Hubble images in quarters. At top left is a crisp view of Mars in shades of orange, blues, and browns. At top right is planetary nebula NGC 2899, which is shaped like a single macaroni noodle, with its central torus appearing semi-transparent and blue and green, and its top and bottom edges in orange. At bottom left is a tiny portion of the Rosette Nebula. Very dark gray material shaped like a triangle takes up the center. At bottom right is barred spiral galaxy NGC 5335 with a milky yellow center that forms a bar surrounded by multiple blue star-filled spiral arms that wrap up counterclockwise.

NGC 1514 (MIRI image). M. Hakan Özsaraç Science NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI www.flickr.com/photos/mhozs...
This mid-infrared image from MIRI showcases the planetary nebula NGC 1514, often called Crystal Ball Nebula. It appears as a roughly spherical, glowing cloud with a complex structure. The nebula exhibits a range of colors, from a bright white outer shell to a mottled interior of red, pink, and blue hues, suggesting varying temperatures and compositions of the ejected stellar material. A bright central star is visible at the nebula's core, surrounded by a faint, star-like halo. The dark background is sprinkled with a few distant stars, while the bottom right corner of the image includes text stating "Processing M. Hakan Özsaraç Science NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI".

In addition, new NIRCam & MIRI data of protostar CB-26 have been released today. This NIRCam one was processed by @yuvharpaz.bsky.social nerdculture.de/@yuvharpaz/1...
A multi-colored infrared image of protostar CB-26 captured by the NIRCam instrument. The central star is intensely bright, exhibiting a prominent eight-pointed diffraction spike pattern due to the telescope's optics. The surrounding nebula displays a complex mix of colors, indicating different temperatures and compositions of gas and dust. A distinct reddish-orange structure is visible to the upper right of the central star, suggesting outflows or jets. The image is composed of four distinct quadrants, with noticeable black seams separating them. Numerous fainter stars and galaxies are scattered throughout the background.

New JWST image dropped: NGC 2283. ESA chose this spiral galaxy to be Picture Of The Month (POTM) for February 2025. ESA/Webb, NASA & CSA, A. Leroy esawebb.org/images/potm2...
A spiral galaxy seen close up and almost face on. It is filled with puffy, patchy clouds of hot gas and dust. Red, orange and yellow colours indicate light emitted by different particles. The brightest colours are in the centre and along the two spiral arms, which wind out from the centre. Star clusters hide in the gas along the arms. A few large, bright white stars are prominent in the foreground, near to us.

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY HERES A NEW HUBBLE IMAGE OF THE TARANTULA NEBULA!!! 🌌
A portion of the Tarantula Nebula, made of variously colored layers of dust clouds. One upper layer is dark reddish dust which is dense and obscures light, in places so dense that it appears black. A middle layer holds pale clouds that are thick like curling wisps of smoke. They form a broad bow across the center of the image. Many small, bright stars lie throughout the nebula. They appear as blue, purple, or red depending on depth.

High quality image of one of the heaviest and most luminous stars in the known universe (Hubble). Processing: Judy Schimdt. www.flickr.com/photos/geckz... 🔭 🧪
This Hubble Space Telescope image showcases WR 124, a Wolf-Rayet star, enveloped by a luminous nebula. The brilliant central star illuminates the surrounding material, creating a vibrant orange glow punctuated by dark, wispy patches of dust and gas. This nebula, formed by the powerful stellar winds ejected from WR 124, reveals the star's dynamic interaction with its environment. The image captures the complex structure and turbulent nature of the nebula, highlighting the distinct features of this massive, evolved star against the backdrop of a dark cosmos speckled with distant stars.

Stunning new image from the James Webb Space Telescope offers a timely reminder that there is so much beauty to be found in this universe, if we look for it.
This image from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope shows a portion of the Leo P dwarf galaxy (stars at lower right represented in blue). Leo P is a star-forming galaxy located about 5 million light-years away in the constellation Leo. A team of scientists collected data from about 15,000 stars in Leo P to deduce its star formation history. They determined that it went through three phases: an initial burst of star formation, a “pause” that lasted several billion years, and then a new round of star formation that is still continuing.

High resolution image of a heavy star. 🔭 🧪
The luminous, hot star Wolf-Rayet 124 (WR 124) is prominent at the centre of the James Webb Space Telescope’s composite image combining near-infrared and mid-infrared wavelengths of light. The star displays the characteristic diffraction spikes of Webb’s Near-infrared Camera (NIRCam), caused by the physical structure of the telescope itself. NIRCam effectively balances the brightness of the star with the fainter gas and dust surrounding it, while Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) reveals the nebula’s structure.

Background stars and galaxies populate the field of view and peek through the nebula of gas and dust that has been ejected from the ageing massive star. A history of the star’s past episodes of mass loss can be read in the nebula’s structure. Rather than smooth shells, the nebula is formed from random, asymmetric ejections. Bright clumps of gas and dust appear like tadpoles swimming toward the star, their tails streaming out behind them, blown back by the stellar wind.
