Not only was Janine’s character design inspired by the designer herself—Gabi Payn created many of the iconic elements on the Real Ghostbusters. Key art. Character model designs. Classic villains. Egon’s new wave hair. Gabi’s authenticity characters made the show as expressive as it was authentic.

The page shows a large painted cell illustration of Real Ghostbusters character Janine Melnitz in the upper left corner. This version of Janine was altered from the original designs following nettling on behalf of concerned parent groups and the Q4 consultancy firm that found Janine to not be “maternal” enough. The voice actor was changed. The character was no longer gloriously sarcastic. Her clothes were adjusted so her skirt wasn’t as short. Even her glasses were changed to rounded because her original frames were deemed as “too pointy.”

An animated cell appears to the left depicting Janine from the pre-parental group fuckery. Shown in a power suit, Janine is carrying a bag of groceries and is shown with a firehouse interior backdrop. The cell may be from the episode “Janine Melnitz: Ghostbuster,” in which Janine suits up to save the Spengler, Stantz, Zeddemore, and Venkman from the supernatural deity Proteus.

Three more insets appear on the page of pencil-drawn model illustrations that the animators would refer to as the developed the series. All of these illustrations show the original first and syndicated season version of the character (the best pre-meddling seasons) except for the one at the low right side of the page. That one appears to be a prototype drawing of Janine, showing the character with hair that might have been closer to movie accurate.

Laura Summer had recently relocated to Los Angeles from New York and was searching for work when a friend of hers suggested she read for a part in an animated Ghostbusters series. The catch was that Summer hadn't seen the film and had no familiarity with the character of Janine at all.

“I went to some place in Burbank, and I remember that I was just like, 'Hello, Ghostbusters. How can I help you?' I didn't do a New York accent; they really didn't ask for it," says Summer.
