Came out the same year as Olympus Has Fallen, a perfect yin-yang of white house die hards, where OHF is for chuds and WHD is for libs.

If you havent seen White House Down it is the perfect worse die hard. Honestly the amount of dumb it is might make it in its own too good tp be background noise.

Yeah this 2007 movie is probably better, both for your purposes and as a movie. Daisy/Clive Cleaner is just like, a worse die hard

Haven taken the desire for a dumb bad movie into account, i am going with CLEANER with Daisy Ridley and Clive Owen.

I disagree with Idiocracy (i'm guessing you dislike it for its eugenicsy stuff, for me it doesn't come particularly close to outweighing its joke quality), most curious about Vivarium here, a movie I loved.

Looking through my Popcorn List sorted by "thriller" and I think my best bet here is Mission: Impossible (1996).

Very early memory of being something like four and having to sit in the theatre's crying baby room for the entirety of Hercules (disney one). Hades and the cyclops titan freak me out.

You would still probably not like someone telling that amy isnt in the ppace you are looking for her

Yeah, you wouldn’t want to hear that, if you seek amy.

The Tangina actress feels born to play Delores Umbridge (sorry for bringing up a Harry Potter thing), what an interesting combination of appearance and voice.

The 80s musta been wild. There’s a scene where a teenage girl gets sexually harassed by some construction workers, and as she playfully gestures for them to fuck off, her mom watches from the window and laughs.

POLTERGEIST (1982): I like it! It hits more on a Spielberg awe-and-wonder level than a horror one (except for when the dude peels off his own face in front of the mirror), but that's cool imo. Naturalistic dialogue, good sets and cinematography.

It was pretty funny when kevin did the "black people vs n----s" bit on the office while roleplaying michael doing it.

The median voter missed "they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the dogs." Trump voters are often people who pay no attention to politics—Harris got huge crowds because politics-heads who go to these things are Dems, where Trump 24 rallies were small and listless

The Trump Administation is first and foremost a standup comedy act by a racist grandpa with dementia, with associated departments for things like crimes and fascism

(I actually thought the song was called "tubthumBing" and thought you had made the typo til i googled it, lol. The same thing happened years ago with "bible-thumping," i dont know why i keep thinking "thumbing" is a thing)

There are two kinds of song: Drunk and High. Tubthumbing is an absolute masterpiece of Drunk music.

I think all of the people in the series who fall in do so in a way they can't get back out. The scientist people build a portal they can enter/exit through with scifi bullshit. The movie is the first time ive seen a rando be able to freely enter and exit at will.

Gabriel R Johnson, novelist @grjohnson.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I will say the webseries is more scientist/hazmat based. Essentially it's three longer episodes about randos with camcorders falling in interspersed with short episodes about hazmat guys

Nebula dropping him isn't about accountability or punishment, it's about the women who work/create for Nebula not being comfortable with him on the platform for totally understandable reasons, many of whom know him personally and feel more betrayed than we do as fans.

I think the biggest mistake they can make is probably centering the scientists/hazmat suit guys, it's way more interesting when regular folks just sorta stumble into it.

I dont know if youve watched the webseries, which obviously has more lore, but even the lore is also mostly vibes (with a little bit of surreal satire thrown in).

Even when it takes a moment to linger on an odd image (like the homeless guy drinking in the parking lot) it feels vital to the vibe. Love the way the camera makes all the outdoor shots feel indoors.

Gabriel R Johnson, novelist @grjohnson.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Its pacing is also kind of ridiculous. It's 110 mins, which isnt exactly long, but it feels like a brisk 90. It does not stop for boring bullshit.

I agree, and I appreciate that it does successfully have Themes, even if those themesare playing it very safe, like they gave Parsons the How To Make An A24 Horror Movie 101 guidebook.

People aren't more rude. They're just more frequently in situations were rudeness is tolerated or positively encouraged. People who yell on the Internet become sweet little pussycats when you're privately hanging out.

Having seen Parsons' webseries, it's incredible some of those individual youtube videos have more backrooms than this whole movie, which really just shows the intial POTS sign area, a little bit of "pool" stuff and then some bigger areas at the end during the chase.

The script issues are made almost invisible by the performances, very smart for a child filmmaker to cast acclaimed actors who could carry basically anything. Ejiofor really sells the tightrope between pathetic and monstrous.

Though it is funny when Mary is like "so uh, are you gonna murder me?" and Scientist Guy is like "i dunno man, why are you so hung up on that? Can we please just geek out about how cool these backrooms are?"

There are issues, to be sure. This is the kind of movie where the character the film eventually decides is its protagonist escapes the monster by beating it with a physical manifestation of her trauma. The ending feels like a deflation more than a resolution (or even cliffhanger).

BACKROOMS (2026, rewatch): this movie has so much fuckin sauce, man, imagine what kind of movies we'll get when Kane Parsons, Child Filmmaker, grows up.

Genuinely kinda great, ngl. Movin this month (already got the keys, it'll be a slow move lol), dating's finally a situation that feels good. Work is a stable situation. Unironically coming up Milhouse.
