Around her neck rests a rekutunpe (choker) strung with brass disks, paired with a longer strand of trade-glass beads (tama-sai), while large brass hoop earrings (ninkari) dangle beside her cheekbones. Subtle blue-black pigment encircles her lips—the traditional sinuye (sacred facial tattoo)—framed by softly waving hair against a lush backdrop of shadowed foliage.

The Aini are the indigenous people of Hokkaido (Ainu Mosir), Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands. During this era of state-sponsored modernization and rapid assimilation policies, traditional practices such as sinuye—performed by female elders to mark a young woman's spiritual maturity and readiness for adulthood—were increasingly prohibited. Early 20th-century ethnographic portraiture thus preserves a critical visual record of Ainu textile traditions, which evolved from indigenous attus (elm-bark fiber cloth) into intricate, appliquéd cotton garments. In Ainu worldview, all natural phenomena, tools, and garments are inhabited by spiritual beings (kamuy), making the crafting of robes a sacred dialogue between human maker and the natural world.

Aesthetically, the garment represents an indigenous expression of monozukuri (artisanal mastery), where technical skill serves spiritual protection. The embroidery placed intentionally around garment openings—cuffs, necklines, and hems—functions as a protective kekkai (sacred boundary), guarding the wearer’s vital energy (ramat) from malevolent spirits (wen-kamuy).
