The swallow pattern on this mid-20th century kimono, rendered in cream against a deep blue ground, exemplifies the Japanese principle of negative space composition, where the birds appear to emerge from and dissolve back into the textured background in a dynamic dance of form and void.

Ainu woman of Old Japan. Hand-colored photo. About 1920’s

Seated in a quiet, dignified pose, a young Ainu woman looks forward with a serene, composed gaze in a hand-colored glass slide from the 1920s. She is dressed in a traditional robe (chikarkarpe) woven with bands of muted slate, ochre, and indigo, accented by a broad, deep violet collar band. The oversized sleeves feature dark applique panels decorated with white embroidery rendering spiraling moreu (scroll motifs) and sharp ayus (thorn-like flourishes). Around her neck rests a rekutunpe (choker) strung with brass disks, paired with a longer strand of trade-glass beads (tama-sai), while large brass hoop earrings (ninkari) dangle beside her cheekbones. Subtle blue-black pigment encircles her lips—the traditional sinuye (sacred facial tattoo)—framed by softly waving hair against a lush backdrop of shadowed foliage.

The Aini are the indigenous people of Hokkaido (Ainu Mosir), Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands. During this era of state-sponsored modernization and rapid assimilation policies, traditional practices such as sinuye—performed by female elders to mark a young woman's spiritual maturity and readiness for adulthood—were increasingly prohibited. Early 20th-century ethnographic portraiture thus preserves a critical visual record of Ainu textile traditions, which evolved from indigenous attus (elm-bark fiber cloth) into intricate, appliquéd cotton garments. In Ainu worldview, all natural phenomena, tools, and garments are inhabited by spiritual beings (kamuy), making the crafting of robes a sacred dialogue between human maker and the natural world.

Aesthetically, the garment represents an indigenous expression of monozukuri (artisanal mastery), where technical skill serves spiritual protection. The embroidery placed intentionally around garment openings—cuffs, necklines, and hems—functions as a protective kekkai (sacred boundary), guarding the wearer’s vital energy (ramat) from malevolent spirits (wen-kamuy).

Day 10 #SciArtSeptember: woad. My #SciArt #embroidery, cell map (2020), has some woad (blue/green) elements in the linen and in the stitching.

An embroidery of the diagram of a cell on blue linen. the details are in whites, blues, turquoise, burgundy, green, and deep orange. The labels are poetic text instead of scientific terms. From bottom right around to bottom left it reads: Pair of pleases. Chance it some. Chromatic & new to us (carries us some of the way) New to us. Chromatic nets. Please remember. Vacant. Reticent about apparent goals. The centre. Where sometimes we met. Two of us. Sector illustrating the firm approach to pleasure. Caring pleases. New to us. Remember. True newness (pleasure). Sector illustrating sides to where time ran and had pleasure.

I don’t agree with the Trump administration on much but Dr. Means, his nominee for Surgeon General, is right when she says we should ban TV ads for junk food. Obesity is a national crisis and the corporate food industry is largely responsible.
