Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 01/10/2026This isn't the first time I've just told an artist to do whatever they want, and it's funny.. almost always the result is something that does feel genuinely representative of me even with the more intangible, personal aspects. I love it, haha. art by @bluehunterart.bsky.social 4263
Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 01/10/2026In continuing my tradition of getting more books than I have time to read. It's been a while since I read any books put out by the community. Figured I'd dip my toes in again. As far as Penguin editions of ancient Roman texts go, I'm just missing Livy now! 030
Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 30/09/2026This is my second time reading this book. This translation isn't quite as good as the Harper version. Still, a solid classic. A book like this couldn't be written today. Irony and satire don't really work anymore today, so it's glorious to revisit a work that manages it right. 010

Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 29/09/2026It always sucks to meet someone you get on well with and who is interesting, but is uninterested in socializing, in general, or with you. Many such cases, unfortunately. 170
Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Also have to love the impossible double standard. If you study STEM: "Your functions are replaceable by AI. We need 'critical thinking' skills taught by the humanities." If you study humanities: "Your skills aren't marketable. You should get a STEM degree." 030

Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 27/09/2026People actually think that? I remember in 2010 there being a lot of people who were huge assholes and inappropriately and offensively sexual about things, way more so than today. I didn't stick around. 111
Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 27/09/2026In the 1970's a general who had seized power via a coup, Jean-Bédel Bokassa, announced the creation of the "Central African Empire". It was short lived. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything with as many Trump vibes as this. 031
Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 27/09/2026People would probably come to less grief if they realized that any sufficiently large microcosm of people will reproduce all the same problems that exist in society as a whole. 051

Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Just after having this thing for a few days, it's already impacted my reading habits a lot. This is about the size of a deck of cards with a fraction of the width, so lightweight you can stick it in a front pocket without noticing it. I'm able to read in more places more conveniently. 240
Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Vibes are bad. Feels like everyone is circling the wagons and gearing up for lean times. Get that sense online and in person. Low trust times. It makes sense with the current economic and political difficulties. I have mixed feelings about it. 170
Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Saw the Resident Evil movie a bit ago. Frankly, I hated it. The usual, run of the mill, overly-self referential and ironic post-modern movie.. a style which was never good, and has been grossly oversaturated for at least 15 years if not more. I saw it because a friend recommended. Damn you Matt! 120

Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 24/09/2026I enjoyed this book a fair bit, but I'm not sure how much I can recommend it to people. It's very bleak, involves animal cruelty and death, although I think it's handled appropriately. A lot of Russian fiction is like this.. I appreciate it, but it won't be to most people's taste. 121

Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Been on prozac for about a day and a half. Really not a pleasant experience so far. Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 22/09/2026So the news was about as good it could be under the circumstances. It was a kidney stone, and now it’s passed. Holy hell that was excruciatingly painful though. Haven’t eaten in 24 hours so I’m hitting a bar now. 270
Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 22/09/2026I think the drugs are finally working. Still don’t know what’s wrong but I’m getting a CT scan later. The pain was so bad I felt like I wanted to die. Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 21/09/2026The most disillusioning thing about grad school so far is that I'm a little shocked by the number of cynical time-punching opportunists who do the bare minimum they can get away with and care nothing for learning their craft.. 151
Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 20/09/2026It's a good day for a cup of tea. Two, even! I'm finding I like tea more and more as I get older. Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Slight detour before I began reading about dark age Italy.
