Oh yes, it was very delicious, one of my favorite parts of the meal in fact, although it was all great!

The final course was sticky toffee pudding. Everything was really great, and the beer and whiskey flowed like water that night. Probably in the top ten best meals I've ever had. It's a night I'll remember the rest of my life. The Celts definitely know how to throw a feast!

Third and fourth courses: Devils on horseback and braised lamb shank! Discovered a truly amazing Scottish beer that night too: Belhaven ale! Extremely distinctive and appealing flavor. Recommend giving it a try if you can find it.

Second course was haggis. I've had good haggis and bad haggis. This was excellent though! People are often surprised when I say I like a good haggis, but it's truly delicious.

In better foodie related posting.. Normally the isles(Britain and Ireland) aren't known for having great food, but early this year I had a truly good Scottish feast. Five course meal with copies amounts of beer and whiskey. Firstly, Cullen skink!

I've had this for a while, but finally got around to reading it this weekend. An interesting series of realist vignettes of Francoist Spain spanning a few days before the Yalta Conference. I've never been disappointed by anything in the NYRB catalogue.

That all looks so good! It's hard to beat a good charcuterie board, although I usually prefer wine with it to beer!

I totally get the instinct to retreat into one's craft, hobby, little sphere. What else can one do? But it also seems perhaps cowardly and hypocritical. That's the dilemma. Yapper's regret today.

It's kind of dispiriting that the bold and energetic seem to be the most evil and corrupt people around while everyone else is just kind of apathetic and disinterested. Perhaps things have always been that way, but with modern technology, the stakes have never been higher.

Honestly makes me deeply pessimistic about the future of the field from a professional and intellectual standpoint, even leaving aside the obvious ethical and political issues. I know I'm howling into the void and nobody cares, but I had to get that off my chest.

Grenzer @grenzer.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
The fact is most professionals in the field won't care as long as they are able to cling to their pre-2023/24 jobs, not until the damage has been done. As long as the money is rolling in/or can continue to do an old job without being forced to adapt to market conditions, people are deaf and dumb.

It's been said before that Computer Science isn't a real science. Without getting into the weeds there, it is deeply, deeply concerning to me how downstream of and dependent on industry(and consequently, finance) the field is today. There is a very, painfully obvious conflict of interest.

It all seems deeply cynical. On the one hand, frank admittance of the problems from an academic, professional, and ethical standpoint.. and then on the other hand, an offloading of the responsibility of those who make the decisions on those who affected by them.

4. Industry is using AI for everything 5. AI adoption outpaces the ability to deal with its consequences 6. We(academics & industry) are going all in on AI 7. If something goes wrong, it's your(not our) fault

Seeing what's going on with CS academia and AI is kind of depressing. If I had to sum up what I've seen thus far.. 1. Widespread AI use causes deskilling and prevents you from learning fundamentals 2. Never trust anything AI does 3. Also we(academics) are using AI for everything

This city is big enough that there are actually multiple Ethiopian places, so hopefully I'll have a better experience elsewhere.

Been slowly trying the cuisine in this city, and on the recommendation of the Beast of Meyokumin(AKA @wolfnextdoor.bsky.social ) I decided to try Ethiopian! Unfortunately it was a bit of a dud. The meat was tough and chewy, and it overall lacked flavor.

Prozac side effects have seemingly completely subsided. I've already noticed some improvements with panic attacks and anxiety. If it is working this well this quickly, then maybe this will be a big help. Feeling on the mend, mentally. It's a refreshing change!

Touching Grass Isn’t Enough: The Furry Fandom’s Issues Are Structural
The problems with the furry fandom today are not as simple as,"Furries need to touch grass!" Unfortunately, whatever you're seeing that makes you want to say such a thing is probably a structural problem with multiple compounding factors. I will elaborate. But first, for anyone who feels lost, I need to explain where we are and how we got here.

In continuing my tradition of getting more books than I have time to read. It's been a while since I read any books put out by the community. Figured I'd dip my toes in again. As far as Penguin editions of ancient Roman texts go, I'm just missing Livy now!

Sinfest? I don't recognize the name but I recognize the art from twitter. The brainrot is so severe there's a fair number of their panels that are nearly indecipherable in terms of the thought process that was going on.

This is my second time reading this book. This translation isn't quite as good as the Harper version. Still, a solid classic. A book like this couldn't be written today. Irony and satire don't really work anymore today, so it's glorious to revisit a work that manages it right.

That seems to be the general rule. There have been a few exceptions, but very few. It seems like people are becoming. more anti-social. Also get the impression that people already have their circles and are closed off to new people. Combination of both things I suppose.

It's still funny that this is a real screenshot of @lastweektonight.com
John Oliver from Last Week Tonight with a tweet I wrote in 2022 at Kandiss Taylor that simply reads "L + ratio + furry butt emote". Below is my Twitch emote, soatokButt. Which features a blue anthro dhole's butt and a smirk looking back over the left butt cheek. The original tweet depicted in the previous screenshot.

Kandiss Taylor: "The furry days are over when I’m governor. Public school is for academics not fairy tales."

Me: "L + ratio + furry butt emote"

It always sucks to meet someone you get on well with and who is interesting, but is uninterested in socializing, in general, or with you. Many such cases, unfortunately.

That sounds terrible. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Sometimes I ruminate on relationships that went badly. You never really know exactly what went on in someone's head, but sometimes you really do just have to decide not to look back. I'm glad things are better for

Also have to love the impossible double standard. If you study STEM: "Your functions are replaceable by AI. We need 'critical thinking' skills taught by the humanities." If you study humanities: "Your skills aren't marketable. You should get a STEM degree."
