Saw them at Portsmouth Poly in 79/80. Two blokes and a a huge tape machine. Blimey, I thought. This is like Kraftwerk, only better…

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

Films that should have been made, no 16: Jacques Tati’s Apocalypse Now. ‘Ok, Marlon, so he comes at you with the big knife, but you duck, he misses, and he chases you around the room. His wet feet make this really loud squelching noise… we fade up the end music from Benny Hill… Better, non?’

The University of Exeter has confirmed that it won’t proceed with compulsory redundancies “at this time”. This means colleagues do not need to complete the pro forma, and there will be no selection process.

“It’s a sign of an unhealthy system that universities are being pushed to this extreme. I’m certain the governors at Lincoln Bishop did not think five years ago, ‘I know what, let’s go down a pathway which ends in us being sold to a private company’." (Hugh Jones)

Further evidence of the adverse consequences of course cuts and closures for working class and lower income students in particular. We need central oversight of the consequences of these cuts before the sector sleep-walks into a national catastrophe via uncoordinated local cuts.

Definitely the case here. In two weeks we find which 9 of 12 in my group will be gone. The other 3 will then have a month to prepare and find hourly-paid replacements for all the classes across two degrees. And supervise 25 PhDs. Plus admin and pastoral care and research. Management doesn’t care.
