AI shouldn't be doing review *for you*, but 1) if you've submitted a manuscript and it's not also preprinted and in the public domain already, that's careless, 2) current generation AI is better than the best humans at some aspects of peer review--it would be a disservice NOT to use it

In May, Vijeta and I had our wedding in Cambridge Commons with hundreds of you all. In June, her grandfather suddenly passed away. In July, her papa was diagnosed with stage IV cancer and a brain tumor. He is 58. He was at our wedding, already symptomatic, and none of us knew.

One additional consideration re: further funding for these kinds of organizations only if existing organizations are successful… where do you draw the line? Why is this large carve out an issue whereas for-profit operators of national labs getting much more $$ are not (e.g., frederick.cancer.gov)

X-labs isn’t necessarily FRO though (which seems to be the assumption, but correct me if wrong). There’s nothing stopping a university from allowing a group of their employees to operate under the X-labs constraints while using university resources that have the economies of scale you mentioned.

Interested in hearing more, but consider that some of what you’re expressing so far rests on assumptions about how proposals will be evaluated and is looking at academia with rose-colored glasses.

“entire 2026 budget” doing some heavy journalistic lifting here. As a large public co, 2026 budgets were probably more or less final pre-Opus 4.5 (maybe even pre-4.1). Very curious what the actual $$ was!

The original post attributed X-labs specifically with a host of concerns about NSF generally policies/ongoings. There’s no evidence those policies are even relevant to X-labs (much to the contrary), so circulating a picture of X-labs as a Trump admin posterboy is disparaging the work of NSF staff.

Greg Medlock @gregmedlock.bsky.social · 15/05/2026
None of these are even related to X-labs! NSF-wide conditions aside, why disparage the staff that have worked hard on this initiative?

Greg Medlock @gregmedlock.bsky.social · 15/05/2026
@mclem.org thank you for deleting the post before it got too much traction. The TIP staffers leading X-labs are decade+, career NSF employees.

Greg Medlock @gregmedlock.bsky.social · 15/05/2026
Michael, this reads as downright conspiratorial. Have you interacted in any way with NSF staff working on this? There’s extensive oversight. No/minimal human subject work is even likely to be funded. There is independent merit-based review. Where are you getting your info?

Fake screenshot from The Onion of a story headlined "Fuck Everything, We're Doing Five Agonists." The article reads, "Would someone tell me how this happened? We were the fucking vanguard of obesity drugs in this country. First it was GLP-1. Fine. Then they came out with tirzepatide, a GLP-1/GIP agonist. Were we scared? Hell, no. Because then came retatrutide. That's GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. But you know what happened next? I'll tell you what happened. The bastards kept going. Now they've got quintatide: GLP-1, GIP, glucagon, amylin and calcitonin. Five agonists. FIVE. Now we're all standing around counting receptor pathways on our fingers like idiots. Well, fuck it. We're doing five agonists."

If you downsample the image identically to what opus 4.6 would have done, is the image token usage equal between models? Feels way too linear that you see a 3x token increase when they increased the allowable resolution 3x.
