Just did some number crunching using latest (Oct 1) ECMWF seasonal data, and I must say that I've never seen such high predictive confidence in a very wet California winter. This is a truly extraordinary forecast amid a record-strength El Niño event. [Thread: please read to end.]

Model-relative sea surface temperature anomalies for November 2026–January 2027. The supplied grid is displayed without added smoothing or coastal filling. Beige marks land and gray marks missing ocean values. The main colour scale spans -2 to +10°F, with white at zero. Hot pink marks anomalies above +10°F. This map does not establish an operational ENSO category.

BREAKING: Newsom signed a bunch of clean energy bills! Californians can now install balcony solar. Plus big wins for virtual power plants, reining in utility profits and converting farmland to solar. One loser: community solar. Really stings. Details: www.climatecoloredgoggles.com/p/newsom-cle...

Breaking: Newsom green-lights balcony solar

The governor finished strong on clean energy — with one big exception.

If you missed it live, and are interested in this year's extreme El Niño event and its potential to bring major California impacts, I'd strongly encourage you to check out the recording! I even created some custom graphics just for this session... youtube.com/live/2v4k0nb...

The ECMWF seasonal ensemble has just updated for September, and it continues to suggest that a soon record-strength El Niño will exert a very strong tilt in the odds toward wet conditions across the U.S. southern tier, including all of California, the Lower Colorado, and SE U.S.

Plot showing data from ECMWF SEAS5 seasonal model September update. It depicts the most likely "tercile" of precipitation during Jan-Mar 2027, and California is painted as "upper tercile" with 70-100% confidence.

Fuel prices today in Arbuckle California. I’ve never seen a $2.70 split between gas and diesel.

Hey, gas station sign off interstate 5 in Arbuckle California showing unleaded gasoline at $5.59 a gallon and diesel and $8.29 per gallon

Trump delivers farmers another financial blow with Iran war

Some of President Trump's policies, the latest being the war in Iran, are testing his support among farmers who are being burdened with higher costs.

Poison oak in California is Toxicodendron diversilobum. I think T. pubescens is the Eastern species of poison oak.

If you wake up angry, sitting outside with a coffee and listening to the morning bird chorus is a good antidote. You might even hear your first Bullock's oriole of spring.

It’s been a while since I’ve heard this, but I have heard some farmers refer to them as “shit-squawks” because that’s what they do when they take off. It’s always startling because they’re hard to spot when you aren’t looking and you have to practically step on them before they fly

that's amazing. I read about kea decades ago in a conservation book called "Last Chance to See" by Douglas Adams (of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" fame). I loved that book, and I'm glad that people are still getting a chance to see kea!

Good thread Tom! In my experience in CA rice, Industrial Ag is not efficient. Excessive tillage, diesel consumption, very low Nitrogen Use Efficiency, and every year more herbicides and fungicides. Dust, methane, smoke. Meanwhile we are doing no-till organic rice with none of those issues.

I've done a lot of flat water kayaking since, but not whitewater--until this weekend. Took a 2-day class on the American River. Boats have changed, techniques have changed, and my body has changed, but wow was it fun! (and the river was crowded)

34 years ago I joined the University of East Anglia Canoe Club in Norwich England and learned to whitewater kayak. Had an amazing year running rivers and surfing the ocean. Sadly I didn't keep it up when I got home. Kayaks were too expensive and I didn't have anyone to go with.
