This work quantifies the potential of methanol as a versatile platform for both chemical and fuel production. The authors show that certain configurations of the methanol economy can achieve the required emission reductions at costs that remain feasible. The message is clear regarding achieving a fully renewable methanol economy: advancing CO₂-to-methanol technologies is central to the field's progress. As metabolic engineering of microbes emerges as a prominent combative force to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions such as CO₂, the authors provide a rundown of natural and synthetic pathways utilized by microbes to accomplish this task. Various strategies for engineering and optimizing CO₂-fixing microbes have been discussed.
