Finding Renée Richards: the complicated past and present of a trans sports pioneer
In 1977, Richards sued to play in the US Open after transitioning. Now she supports bans on trans athletes in women’s sports. A new biography explores a complex legacy It was a story that dominated tennis headlines back in 1977: Dr Renée Richards, an ophthalmologist who excelled as a male amateur player before a sex-change operation, was suing for the right to play in the women’s draw of the US Open. Where did Richards go for legal assistance? None other than Roy Cohn. Better known for prosecuting suspected communists during the red scare and mentoring Donald Trump, Cohn turned his attention to fighting for Richards’s inclusion. His firm successfully argued the case – part of the narrative of a new biography, Finding Renée Richards: The Groundbreaking Story of Tennis’s Trans Pioneer by Julie Kliegman. Continue reading...

This kimono features a bold composition of plum blossom branches with delicate white flowers set against dramatic alternating panels of deep teal and black, creating a graphic sensibility that reflects the period's movement toward more streamlined design approaches. The rinzu damask ground displays the subtle sayagata pattern, a traditional geometric motif of interlocking swastikas that symbolizes prosperity and good fortune, providing textural depth beneath the surface decoration.

The artistic treatment combines screened motifs with faux-shibori techniques to create the bird forms, demonstrating the creative adaptation of traditional resist-dyeing methods through mechanized processes. The plum blossoms carry their traditional symbolism of perseverance and hope, particularly poignant during the challenging war years when such motifs offered spiritual comfort and cultural continuity. The bold color blocking and simplified compositional approach reflect the influence of modernist design principles that were beginning to infiltrate Japanese decorative arts, while the integration of traditional nature motifs maintains the garment's connection to classical Japanese aesthetic values. This piece exemplifies the transitional moment in Japanese textile history when traditional craftsmanship met industrial necessity, resulting in designs that were both economically practical and artistically innovative.

“Totoro”. Studio Gibli, Japan
Framed by the dark, silhouetted trunks of ancient trees and branches laden with vibrant magenta foliage, an enchanted woodland realm opens into a soft, luminous mist. In the foreground, perched upon an emerald-paved stone path, the small white forest spirit (Chibi-Totoro) and medium blue spirit (Chū-Totoro) sit side-by-side, their backs turned as they gaze toward the glowing horizon. Rising beyond the grassy knoll, the colossal, gentle form of the great forest guardian (O-Totoro) emerges, his immense slate-grey head and wide, inquisitive eyes peeking through the canopy. A hazy canyon and pale, layered mountain peaks drift in the background under a soft, dreamlike sky. The illustration evokes a magical sensory atmosphere: the cool, damp fragrance of moss-covered earth and spring leaves, the quiet whisper of mountain breezes through high boughs, the faint rustle of spirit footsteps along ancient stones, and the breathless, reverent awe of stepping into a hidden sanctuary of nature. Inspired by Studio Ghibli’s 1988 animated masterwork My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro), directed by Hayao Miyazaki, this stylized artwork celebrates the film’s profound roots in Shinto animism and environmental reverence. Set in the lush, agricultural satoyama landscape of Japan’s post-war countryside, the narrative re-enchants the natural world by portraying kami—indigenous spirits that inhabit ancient camphor trees, rivers, and deep woodlands—as benevolent guardians accessible through the pure, unsullied imagination of youth. Studio Ghibli’s legacy of traditional hand-drawn animation embodies the spirit of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and devotion to material craft), where thousands of hand-painted cels and richly rendered background art celebrate the textures of rain, wind, and foliage.

Ayako Wakao in the 1966 drama film Irezumi, directed by Yasuzō Masumura.
Seated in profile with her back turned toward the viewer, actress Ayako Wakao reveals her bare shoulder, marked with the chilling, sprawling ink of a giant female spider (jorōgumo). Her dark, floral-patterned kimono slips loosely past her shoulders, spilling into a rich crimson-and-gold inner lining draped across her waist. Her porcelain skin glows softly under directional light, creating a stark contrast against the menacing black abdomen and reaching legs of the arachnid etched across her shoulder blade. Behind her, a traditional timber-and-paper lattice screen (shōji) casts subtle linear shadows against the wall, while her high, swept-up coiffure and delicate kanzashi hairpin maintain the immaculate silhouette of an Edo-period heroine. Her averted, downward glance blends quiet vulnerability with an emerging, lethal resolve.
The film centers on Otsuya (portrayed with intoxicating intensity by Wakao), a merchant's daughter who is abducted and forcibly tattooed by an obsessive master tattooist who sees in her the ultimate canvas for his life's work. Instead of crushing her spirit, the demonic mark unleashes a predatory power within Otsuya, transforming her from an innocent victim into a formidable dokufu (poison woman) who consumes the men drawn into her web. Masumura’s vivid Daiei Color palette and sharp psychological direction represent an era of cinematic monozukuri (artisanal mastery), merging Tanizaki’s decadent Meiji literature with the bold, visceral sensibilities of 1960s modern cinema.

Just as Blackmore smashed a glass ceiling in becoming the first woman to ride the winner of the Grand National, Osborne is the first to partner the winner of the St Leger, the world’s oldest Classic, in its 250th year. For that matter, she is the first to win any British Classic after triumphing with Highwayman. Continue reading...

This 1897 Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print by artist Adachi Ginkō is titled The Wife of Takeda Katsuyori Armed with a Naginata. It depicts Hōjō Masako bravely wielding a traditional pole weapon during the tragic fall of her clan.
Created in 1897 by Adachi Ginkō (1853–1902) for his celebrated series Kokon Meifu Kyō (Mirror of Famous Noblewomen of Ancient and Modern Times), this dramatic woodblock print depicts the tragic resolve of Lady Hōjō (Hōjō-fujin, 1564–1582)—wife of Takeda Katsuyori—during the final collapse of the Takeda clan at the Battle of Tenmokuzan (distinguishing her from her famed Kamakura-era namesake, Hōjō Masako). Daughter of the daimyo Hōjō Ujiyasu, the young noblewoman was married to Katsuyori to solidify an alliance between the rival warrior houses. In 1582, as the combined armies of Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu closed in on Mount Tenmoku, Lady Hōjō steadfastly refused to abandon her husband or flee back to her birth clan, choosing instead at just nineteen years of age to stand alongside the Takeda loyalists before committing ritual suicide.

Ginkō captures her here in the heroic tradition of the onna-musha (female warrior), framing her as an archetype of steadfast martial devotion (retsujo). Bracing herself against a wooden battle barrier, she grips a long-shafted naginata—the traditional defensive weapon of samurai wives—her gaze locked in intense concentration as a enemy arrow streaks past her through the smoke-laden air. Sartorially, the print presents a poignant tension between high-court elegance and combat chaos: her long, unpinned black hair (kurokami) sweeps dramatically across her shoulders, while a crisp white undergarment (kosode) is exposed beneath a sweeping outer robe (uchikake) emblazoned with vibrant floral medallions, crimson chrysanthemums, and geometric shippō (seven treasures) patterning. Framed by the deep indigo of a pine-lined night sky and an inset cartouche recounting her bravery, Ginkō’s composition transforms a harrowing historical defeat into a poetic, enduring monument to female fortitude at the close of the Sengoku period.

“Kiki’s Delivery Service” directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Japan
Released in 1989 by Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki’s Kiki’s Delivery Service (Majo no Takkyūbin) stands as one of the most cherished coming-of-age masterworks in modern hand-drawn animation. This iconic key visual captures thirteen-year-old Kiki soaring high above the coastal port city of Koriko, embarking on her traditional year of independent witch training. Clad in her simple dark indigo dress and accented by her trademark oversized scarlet hair bow, Kiki navigates the sky aboard her mother’s straw broomstick, accompanied by her familiar—the black cat Jiji, who peers cautiously from her leather shoulder bag—and a small red transistor radio dangling from the broom shaft. A flock of white seagulls banks alongside her in flight, their sweeping wings reinforcing the weightless sense of movement and aerial freedom that remains a hallmark of Miyazaki’s directorial vision.

Visually, the composition showcases Studio Ghibli’s legendary commitment to immersive world-building and painterly environmental design. Koriko itself is a magnificent architectural tapestry inspired by location scouting trips Miyazaki and his creative team undertook across Sweden, drawing heavily from the medieval Hanseatic town of Visby on the island of Gotland and the historic Gamla Stan district of Stockholm. Miyazaki envisioned the setting as an idealized, alternative 1950s European city untouched by the destruction of the World Wars, combining retro-futuristic transport with old-world charm. Spread out beneath Kiki's broom is a labyrinth of red-tiled roofs, winding cobblestone streets, stone bridges, and deep harbor basins that gradually give way to lush, rolling farmland along the ocean bay, all rendered in rich, hand-painted gouache tones.

Beyond its visual enchantment, the image encapsulates the film's core psychological themes: independence, creative vulnerability, and the transition into adulthood.
