The UN AI panel's first Thematic Brief "sets a dangerous precedent at the science–policy interface," argue Jason Tucker, Virginia Dignum and Petter Ericson, by treating the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident as more of an alignment problem rather than an oversight failure.

Employees and executives of GEO Group, ICE's largest detention contractor, appear in the metadata of a growing number of DHS detention contract solicitations. The contracts are open to competition from other companies. Neither GEO nor DHS will say what role GEO played in preparing the documents.
A metadata readout for a five-page PDF titled "Performance Work Statement." The Company field reads "GEO Group Inc." and appears twice. The file was created on Sept. 25, 2026, at 1:44 p.m. Eastern using Acrobat PDFMaker 26 for Word. The Author and Creator fields are blurred.
A PDF open in a viewer, titled "Attachment 10c1 - Enhanced Transport Requirements Requirement C (Philadelphia)." The page is headed "Moshannon Enhanced Transportation." It lists requirements for ICE offices in Philadelphia, York and Pittsburgh. These include 24-hour detention, transport and guard coverage; additional "GTI" guard and transport assets; and at least three extra transport teams per day, seven days a week, to stage near arrest teams and act as a "mobile detention facility" until the vans are full. The Pittsburgh section says a hub site would free deportation officers to make more arrests. The metadata panel shows the file was created Dec. 11, 2025, with Acrobat PDFMaker 25 for Word. The author field contains the name of a GEO Group Executive Vice President. A PDF open in a viewer, titled "Attachment 10c - Anticipated Transportation Routes Estimate Requirement C (Philadelphia)." The page is a table headed "Moshannon Incremental Mileage Estimate." It lists routes from Dover and the Pittsburgh Sub-Office to ICE offices, airports, federal prisons and about 20 county prisons, with miles per trip, vehicle type, trip frequency and total annual miles. The largest entry is Pittsburgh to Erie County Prison, five times a week, at 68,120 miles a year. The metadata panel shows the file was created Dec. 10, 2025, in Microsoft Excel. The author field contains the name of a GEO Group senior vice president.

A huge issue here is that work and personal networks *often* overlap. I would be 0% surprised if there is a sprawling yet fairly closed network of romantic partners, especially over time. What that means is not clear, but its existence isn't all that revelatory, imho

This became clearer when I realized that the weights and tokens are all under erasure. Personal interpretation is the only way to make sense of outputs, so the idea of alignment requires a way to respect mutually inaccessible representations. Many goals are mispecified relative to this fact.

It intuitively seems like a use case that's worth it and token bounded compared to other tasks: A data source needs ETL for downstream use. The code can be validated regardless of how messy the data are, and it can give you a sense of how messy it is. I'm thinking whitelisted uses as an option?

Local BBSes were such a weird sweet spot for this, too. Had to pay money to socialize online with people who lived farther away. Whole communities arose and were forced to at least nominally adhere to a social contract, because you would meet in person, because you were shunned if you broke it.
