All of this!! And especially 📢INCLUDE TIME FOR EDITS📢 edits are two-pronged: (1) you will wait to receive notes at several stages of the process. could be weeks! could be months! talk with editor so you understand THEIR turnaround (2) once you have notes, you will need time to edit 🙂‍↕️

She's yelling about graphic novels again. I wrote a blog post about how to track work hours and do the math to build better work schedules. This speaks to graphic novelists specifically but it's good info for any freelancer!

Smoke ~
A stylized drawing of my original characters Hudson (left) and Quill (right).
This was done in a mix of traditional and digital mediums.
I drew the lines on paper with a gpen and ink and then edited them in Krita after my scanner kinda ate them.
The image features both characters in their own individual panels visible from the mid waist on up.

Hudson is sitting down with one leg crossed over the other. Both hands resting on it.
His left holds a cigarette that emanates smoke that escapes the panel boarders, crosses into Quill’s and back again.

Quill is laying down, and is shown upside down compared to Hudson. He wears big sunglasses that hide his eyes and is resting his head upon one arm folded behind it.

Both of them seemingly smile at one another from their respective panels.

The people saying "book bans are good for book sales" and that "AI is here to stay, just accept it" are basically saying the same thing: that you should be quiet about harmful things and accept the status quo. Which is why you should scream and keep screaming against harmful systems.

For all my knight lesbians out there ⚔️🐎🌹
Digital illustration of a female knight sitting at a horse and holding a long lance. She's seen from the side, in a full armor, with a heraldic gryphon on her chest, and some scars on her face. Her wavy hair is down, with the sides braided away from her face. The horse is also wearing an armor, with a metal unicorn horn on its head. The character is in greyscale and there's a fluo pink gothic type overlaid on top saying 'Lesbian Jousting'. Additional small copy says 'a medieval martial sport where two armoured lesbian knights charge at each other with lances at full speed, aiming to unseat the opponent'.

Butterbutt. An older comic.
A four-panel comic titled "yellow-rumped warbler poem". In panel 1, a yellow-rumped warbler stands on a branch in a late autumn scene, and says "Fall is here." In panel 2, the warbler watches a brown leaf fall to the ground, and says "Winter's near." In panel 3, the warbler faces the viewer as brown leaves fall, and says "Need some cheer?" In panel 4, the warbler is showing its luminous yellow rump, and cheerfully says "See my rear."

These were three individual pieces I did in 2021. Unplanned, they became something of an accidental sequence. They then prompted me to make the piece in the quoted post, of the pumpkin dance, by way of a conclusion. Ink on Fabriano Medioevalis, each 95 × 64 mm.
Three small silhouette drawings in black ink. The first is of a sitting fox, looking back over its shoulder at a bird on the branch of a little bare shrub. The second has a playful-looking fox, half-crouched, tail in the air, looking at a bird which has just taken off from a branch. The third shows a fox, surprised, its head drawn slightly back, as it seems to have come upon a pumpkin on the ground, surrounded by its vines. It has a face like a carved jack-o'-lantern.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

the problem isn't that production time takes too long. the problem is that artists are underpaid and overworked. you don't need genAI to solve the production problem; you need to funnel that money to paying people a liveable wage.

Panel 2: Wile celebrates his long sought after victory

Panel 3: Wile steps out from behind the boulder and is immediately confronted by Columbo who says “Mr. Coyote” in his typically annoying but persistent manner

Panel 4: Columbo calls his name again. Panicked, Wile retreats quickly behind the boulder, but in his heart of hearts, he knows it will do no good. In about two hours he’ll be going to prison. And not cartoon prison. Human prison.
