Reposting this today in honor of Perry Mehrling. On top of the influence he had everywhere else, he was the philosopher's monetary economist, as gracious with us as he was with everyone else. He will be missed. RIP

I remember the first time I had dinner with him, 15 years ago. He was exuberant, witty, expansive, even charming the people at the next table into our conversation. A huge intellectual influence for me and many others, but also a person who was full of energy and fully himself. What a terrible loss.

Now that is its public, Perry made me who I am today. A brilliant scholar and generous teacher who created a motley band of graduate student for whom he was a surrogate academic parent. I will miss you forever.

How about Fibonacci day? Or maybe Luca Pacioli day: his Particularis de computis et scripturis taught the world about double-entry bookkeeping. Those are some cool Italians
Text: “Fuck Columbus, man,” Chris R., a 52-year-old from Brooklyn, told The Groove. “I’m all for an Italian day, but pick a cool Italian. Pick somebody who did something. … You’re backing the wrong horse.” Da Vinci Day has a nicer ring to it, he offered.

Here's the most baller piece of money I've ever seen: a shekel of Hannibal—yes, that one. While he was storming around Italy wiping out Roman armies left & right, he was striking these coins featuring his ultimate weapon—war elephants—to strike terror in Roman hearts when buying stuff for his army.

Rubio: "For the Greeks of antiquity, the pursuit of excellence was the very principle of man’s existence. They organized all of civic life around contest, ambition, competition: in philosophy and poetry, in sculpture and drama, in athletics and art, in war and statecraft."

No single Palace album, plus the early 7"s had better songs than the longer releases. Khruangbin violates my self-imposed nothing-after-undergrad rule. Thought long and hard about _Millions Now Living_, which was def life-altering--but that was mostly "Djed," not the whole album

Nine is way too few. I'm already wanting to edit my list--except I don't know what to take off. And I cut myself off at 1998: plenty of stuff that got played after midnight in the early oughts has a place here too. It's impossible! Absurd!!

I listened to that album a lot a lot at the start of undergrad. Minimal pretty dark repetative indie-ish rock. This exercise, obviously, is impossible. I put that on in the spirit of, There is always shit about you that no one else ever knows

Let's all take a deep breath before we say things we can't take back. First, modern science doesn't get off the ground without believing in natural law, and second--and this is a geniune question--where does Aristotle talk about natural LAW? Natural teleology needn't be law-like

Were there any good intentions behind this disdain of pleasure? Perhaps. Whatever the case, he sparked riots:
Text: Graham only delivered his controversial “Lecture to Mothers,” which taught female anatomy and counseled less sex, three times. While delivering the lecture in late June 1834, a mob gathered outside the Temple Street Chapel in Portland, threw rocks through the church windows, and stopped Graham from speaking. Protesters in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1833 and Boston in 1837 also put an end to his lectures due to the women’s rights concerns Graham raised.

New England Grahams: not the best Grahams
Text: Sylvester Graham: Presbyterian minister and health crusader Sylvester Graham viewed physical pleasure, especially sexual stimulation, with suspicion. Graham believed that diet directly influenced sexual urges and considered masturbation ("self-pollution" or "self-abuse") a grave evil leading to numerous physical and mental ailments, including blindness and early death.2 His infamous Lecture to Young Men, published in 1834, significantly contributed to the American masturbation scare. His dietary recommendations, including the famous graham cracker, were partly intended to suppress sexual desires.

In his book, Graham noted that masturbators could be identified by their symptoms:

...a body full of disease, and with a mind in ruins, the loathsome habit still tyrannizing over him, with the inexorable imperiousness of a fiend of darkness.
