Tremulous Oak Sanctuary perches on top of a hill dotted with—big surprise—oak trees. They even quiver as the wind gusts through their branches. As we pull up to the gate house, I jump out of the car, leaving Kate to wrap up her conversation with the driver. Or not. “Where’re you going?” The ends of Kate’s scarf, the same deep green as the needles on the surrounding trees, flutter as she jogs to catch up to me.
I shrug, but the forest has captured my senses. The carpet of wood sorrel, the sounds of birds and a creek somewhere, the way my feet squelch on the wet ground, and the petrichor smell all pull at me. It’s almost enough to make me relax around my might-be-a-murderer-sister. I pause, hands on hips. “Go ahead. Lead the way.”
She stands there for a moment. “Actually, you’re going down the right path.”
I roll my eyes, and we continue on, falling into a comfortable pace. Kate’s umbrella swings by her side, a habit that she’s had since childhood. It reminds me of the first time she ran away.

No, no, no. I squeeze my eyes shut, bracing for a hand on my arm. An expression full of pity. Instructions to breathe more deeply. Shallow assurances that everything is fine. That I just need to sleep better. Eat better. Exercise. Lose weight. Go outside. Get a social life. Be better.

None of that happens. The water runs and then the electric kettle starts burbling. Cupboard doors clatter.

“Farthest right,” I say between breaths. They’re coming slower now.
Little puffs of sugar and cocoa fill the air as Stacy scoops hot chocolate powder into three mugs. She uncorks an elixir and adds a generous tablespoon to each cup. After a vigorous three seconds of stirring for each, she grabs the handles and turns to me. “You good?”

The words are meant to reassure. They should reassure me after her thorough search. But the alarm system in my brain blares on in perverse persistence, like that DJ at my cousin’s wedding that refused to play anything but EDM. Just because I caught the slightest movement out of the corner of my eye, my brain is convinced that there’s something out there that will harm me. It doesn’t know exactly what, but it has plenty of suggestions all presented in stuttering dubstep: sa-sa-sa-serial killers, ra-ra-ra-rabies, ex-plo-sives. Just wait for the beat drop. Stupid brain.

Short Pitch:

When Bronwyn becomes the apprentice of the last Wizard of the Great Houses of Magic, a Necromancer threatens to restart the war which plunged the continent of Riviera into chaos. When her teacher refuses to answer the call to battle, it's up to Bronwyn herself to go in his place, and in the process she becomes entangled in a world of magic, secrets, and death. Can she survive the responsibility being placed on her young shoulders?

A reader's summary:

Imagine a medieval world of magic: Then a new age dawns, where rifles and muskets put power back in the hands of the non-magical. Blasting through the defences of the wizards, the magical ruling class is brought low in a continent-spanning war. Left in the ashes is Bronwyn, orphaned by battle, and apprentice to one of the last remaining wizards. She is a young woman whose existence asks the question: what do you do with knowledge that makes you into a target? Are you inherently dangerous? Should magic ever be learnt again? She turned on the spot again, and the candlelight fell over a corpse. Grey, desiccated skin on the verge of sloughing away from pale bones. Rotted lips peeled away from jagged shards of teeth protruding directly from bone, and black eyes more like those of a cave-dwelling fish than a human being stared out at the world with unmistakable hunger.

The corpse had not been there before. Bronwyn was certain of it.

Hesitantly she approached, every nerve on edge, her heart pounding in her ears. She reached the toe of one boot forward to nudge it – and the corpse twitched.
