Eye to eye with a redtailed hawk on this morning’s five-mile ramble. #Hiking #Birding #GetOutside #AltText
A large hawk is perched on a mossy limb of a dead willow and looking down right at the camera with its piercing eyes. Its breast and underside is a buff white with pretty rusty brown speckles across the breast. It has a curved and sharp beak, yellow near its face and sort of olive gray on the bend and point. You can see a sharp talon, and its tail below the limb.

Sad sad sad. If you go into the NW wilderness, especially the Enchantments, go prepared for hellacious weather. www.seattletimes.com/life/outdoor...

The snowstorm, which blanketed the highest elevations of the Cascades over the weekend, also left one hiker with severe hypothermia.

Really cannot overstate just how important it is to keep wildlands roadless. The human species needs to live within our own means and let wildlands remain wild. Our future on this planet depends on the viability of biomes & ecosystems everywhere. Please comment at the link below -

Big boy came through the hood Sunday, was able to grab my camera and get a shot.
Close photo of a blacktailed deer buck with impressive, nicely rounded antler still in velvet. Its ears are large, characteristic of the species and its eyes and nose big and black.

Only known woolly dog pelt returns to B.C. after more than 160 years
The pelt, which belonged to a canine companion of American naturalist George Gibbs, had been in the Smithsonian Institution since 1859.

Let’s talk about Medicare for All. What would it mean for the individual American? ⬇ The day you’re born you get a card that gives you health insurance with no premium, co-pay, or deductible. Doesn’t matter if you get a job, lose a job, turn 26 or 65, get married or divorced — it's there for you.

🏺 Great write up of this complicated topic. I'd merely add its *our* perception that treating human bodies in the same way as consumed animal bodies was necessarily an act of violence or disdain, because it assumes that hunting, butchering & eating other creatures is primarily about calories.

The bumbles were really going after the pretty hardhack blossoms at one spot on the morning ramble, cool to witness the relationship between native species. I think this is a common Bombus, a yellow-faced bumble bee. #Hiking #Bloomscrolling #Bees #PNW
A pretty pink cone of a hardhack blossoms, the flower of a bush called Douglas spirea, a pod that looks like hundreds of tiny flowers, with a fuzzy black and yellow bumblebee hovering near it. You can see the bee’s blurred wings and aentenna and the shot is close enough that it shows its furry-fuzzy body.

Happy Juneteenth! ❤️💛💚🖤 Let us honor the courage and resilience of those who fought for equal freedom. The fight continues... May our collective journey toward a truly equitable future run deep and strong🙏 A photo from The Dosewallips River Trail , WA🌲
A vibrant, high-angle shot of a powerful, rushing river flowing through a lush, wild canyon. The water is bright white as it churns into rapids and spills over several small, tiered waterfalls. Massive, dark grey boulders—many slick with moisture and patches of green moss—are scattered throughout the riverbed, breaking up the flow. Several weathered, fallen big tree trunks are caught between the rocks and waterfalls. The left bank rises steeply, covered in rich green moss and flanked by dense, towering evergreen trees that extend to the top of the frame. In the foreground, a mossy, light-green rocky ledge overlooks the dramatic water feature below.

There is a tender, almost sacred relief in the hushed space between the rains, nestled in the woods. Have a wonderful weekend, everyone 🍃🌲 #ForestFriday #PNW #ForestBathing #vinemaple
A view into a lush forest canopy dominated by vibrant green vine maples. Two slender, dark tree trunks rise from the bottom center. Their branches spread upwards and outward like a delicate web across the frame. Sunlight filters through the dense layers of translucent, multi-pointed green leaves, creating a glowing, stained-glass effect. The upper canopy forms a nearly solid roof of brilliant green, with only tiny slivers of bright blue sky peeking through the foliage in the upper left. The background is filled with a soft, layered blur of additional green leaves and branches, giving a deep sense of being immersed inside a sunlit, peaceful woodland.

Camas in full bloom. Camassia is super important plant to the first people, who traditionally cultivated it in meadows they maintained by periodic burning and harvested the bulb, rich in starch/sugar. #Hiking
Several long stems topped by pretty blue flowers, atop a mound in a meadow.
