Skigill, PC/Steam - Ultra-clever idea for a Bullet Heaven/Survivors-like game where the area you navigate IS the skill tree. This one has cute monochrome visuals (those lizards!!) and a banging chiptune soundtrack. I can’t wait to see how it opens up with later unlockables.
A screenshot of the game Skigill, a bullet-heaven/Survivors-like game featuring a wizard main character who is running away from enemies, leaving a flaming trail behind. The color palette is yellow/tan with a purple background. There are nodes featuring upgrades throughout the playfield.A screenshot of the game Skigill, a bullet-heaven/Survivors-like game. The Shaman’s Ark, PC/Steam - @dominictarason.com recommended this and it’s good stuff! It has that AA feel you don’t get much anymore. You’re a shaman trouncing around landscapes, engaging in rhythm-based combat. Also features a unique setting inspired by nomadic Asian cultures. A true hidden gem.
A screenshot of the game The Shaman’s Ark, depicting the main character, who is a small shaman dressed in a red robe. The shaman is in a dialogue with a boss character, who is an aged man with a long beard who has insect-like arms and legs coming out at unnatural angles. He is indicating he has killed all the other incarnations of shaman before this and will do the same to the playable character. A screenshot of the game The Shaman’s Ark, depicting the main character, who is a small shaman dressed in a red robe holding a ceremonial drum. The shaman is on top of a raised section of the green landscape, looking over bluffs closer to the camera as well as hills and a decaying gazebo-like structure in the distance. The shaman is in the middle of a rhythm-based combat section, facing off against a boss with a long beard and insect-like arms and legs. A shield icon is moving towards the bottom of the screen, and another blank icon is moving along the circles on the right side of the screen. Ouros, Steam PC/MacOS, iOS, Android - This tactile puzzle game is the epitome of chill and calm. You’re moving points on a 2d vector to stretch and transform, ensuring it hits all the shapes in order. Sounds complex, but it’s easy to get and fun without being frustrating. Perfect on Deck with touch!

CD-ROM, PC/Steam - I think the logic of a couple earlier puzzles is a bit too esoteric, but this is a great way to spend an afternoon. Point and click your way through a stack of old CDs and utilize the contained programs to solve a bunch of puzzles. Very clever and pleasant to tease through!

Puzzle Depot, PC/Steam/Itch.io - Easily one of the best Sokoban-style games I’ve seen, this game features large levels with lots of screens to mix short- and long-term goals. Typically seems insurmountable, but always makes you feel like a genius. Thoughtful & funny plot, great pixel art and music.

Ducky’s Delivery Service, PC/Steam/Itch - I feel like this could be could be an all-time competitive score-chaser. Words can’t express how it feels to skillfully flap around these levels, tossing packages into mailboxes as fast and precisely as possible. Wonderful music. A masterful arcadey snack.

And with that I've played a whopping 18 demos this Next Fest! Honestly, this might be one of the best Next Fests yet, I've played quite a lot and there's been some incredible ones. The highlights: Silver Pines, Well Dweller, Sprawl Zero, Welcome to Elderfield.
Screenshot from Silver Pines showing a ski lift being mobbed by crows Screenshot from Well Dweller showing a pretty horrible creepy boss monster, it's got a round face with spikes and a creepy grin, its body is adorned with masks Screenshot from Sprawl Zero, the player character is firing a rifle, there's a distinctly grey/brown ruined cityscape Screenshot from Welcome to Elderfield, the text says "A Cornstalker appears..." and there's what looks like a scarecrow, but his head is corncobs

About Fishing (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam - What an apt title, because this game features a lot of fishing, but is also About Fishing in a ponderous way. Lo-fi dithered visuals in a way I’ve never seen before add to this game’s unsettling vibe. The fishing gameplay is surprisingly meticulous?

Hyper Bun Buster: Rocker Hammer Action (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam Deck - I don’t think I’m familiar with the inspiration, but this game easily won me over with its classic arcade action. Beautifully animated spritework and jazzy music seal the deal. I love whacking things into other things!

Arcane Eats (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam Deck - if you’re a certain type of person (say, exactly like my partner), then a roguelike deckbuilder where you run a fantasy tavern cooking meals for customers is laser-focused on being exactly What You Crave. This is going to be so many people’s obsession.

Blood Dungeon (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam Deck - Yes, yet another Survivors-like game, but a very, very good one! Messhof are masters of their uglycute visual style and the hoppy honkin’ soundtrack and DIY audio have an easy charm to them. Nothing you haven’t played before, but highly engaging!

Truck-kun is Supporting Me from Another World?! (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam - Genuinely funny and fun to play, this Isekai-inspired driving/action game has more character than you can fit in a kei truck. Smooth to play, easy on the eyes, and filled with things (and people) to hit with your vehicle.

Future? No Thanks! (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam - Stalwart indie developer Molleindustria shows exactly how you can do the making-fun-of-everyone thing while still being hilarious. This is an open-world chat-em-up that unexpectedly never stopped making me laugh. This confident satire is a good’un.

Order of the Sinking Star (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam - The director of this game has some abhorrent views, but I have to admit this is a very polished and enjoyable take on Sokoban, based on other licensed titles. There’s lots of polish and overlapping mechanics in this very generous slice.

Kaido Genkai: An Anime Racing RPG (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam Deck - Lots of charisma and style in this story-based driving game set in the nostalgic countryside of 90s Japan. Great use of cel-shaded visuals and some of the best darn J-Rock music I’ve heard anywhere to set the perfect tone.

World’s Greatest Author (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam - I am such a sucker for an incremental Cookie Clicker-alike, and this one sets it apart from lesser games with its unique setting and whimsical satire of the publishing business. Number go up is good, but the moment-to-moment gameplay is engaging!

The Alters (demo), PC/Steam - Very pleasantly surprised with this. Felt like Death Stranding-lite, but the main conceit of the game hit my brain like lightning and hasn’t left go since. 2d-cutaway base building, 3rd-person planet exploration, and a truly heady sci-fi story (high PC requirements tho)
