Terri was lovely. She died far too young. SOUNDS 15/11/1980 TERRI SANAI travels to Manchester on a voyage of discovery. EXPLODING OUT of nowhere came 'Pindrop', a record of shining enterprise and wisdom, as anonymously packaged as it was thrilling, a disquietingly perceptive and beautiful debut.

Dick Witts is 28, stocky, affable, confident, garrulous. Certainly not the frail and doubt-ridden adolescent I had pictured him to be. Lorraine remains anonymous. After Pindrop was finished, Dick's arm was severely hurt in an accident, and his percussioning days were apparently over. So Joe McKechnie was pulled in from Modern Eon. Joe's 20, shy and fresh-faced, friendly and This Heat-obsessed. He's rigorously left-wing, a fact which he doesn't advertise, and was only prompted into admittance when I mentioned my past delvings into certain left wing extremist activities. Enough.
With Dick on synthesiser and Joe on drums, a vocalist was needed. Cue Lizzy Johnson, a female voice and therefore the first radical change in the layout of the Passage's music.

Then came the addition of a guitarist.

ANDY WILSON is just 16, alarmingly intelligent and concisely articulate. He completed 'O' levels at 14, dawdled with 'A's, found them boring and left. He's languid and fragile, aloof and hollow-faced, emanating the sort of indifferent composure that leaves you feeling slightly ridiculous.

I soak up local information with slack-jawed fascination. The comings and goings of the Factory personnel, how the spoilt brats of Factory, A Certain Ratio, lord it at the Beach Club, where membership is not compulsory but 1930s tramp-imitations are. Joe: "Dick will deny it, but the lyrics on 'A Certain Way To Go' are about Ratio.'
So they are. What tenuous bitchiness. "They look divine/Deep coats, military hair/And the way they stared with grim eyes and blank lips/And wished you were dead/One less piece of competition.
But then the whole weekend was full of surprises.

Finally, we travel to the giant Victorian warehouse which serves as their rehearsal area. Inside, it's decaying elegantly, dry rot and grandeur and darkness and ghosts. I want to shout out "Joy Division!" because it is, but I refrain.

When we opened the club I ordered the sound system with very little knowledge of what was needed, as a consequence the record decks I ordered were 'belt drive', impossible to mix on, you just had to blend tracks as best you could. Lesson learnt.
I used to bill myself as a 'Record Player' rather than a DJ.

Impossible to say how much I hate G4S and the NHS's private outsourcing to them for patient transport. They are now 3.5hrs late. Booked for 6:30am, I woke up at 5am to cater for this. I must arrive between 10am and 2pm, which are the admission times. I also require dialysis upon arrival.
