We just announced a big grant we got from @aria-research.bsky.social! We're aiming to use cryptographic protocols to allow mutually untrusting parties and their agents to prove to each other that they are telling the truth martin.kleppmann.com/2026/10/07/c...

Holy shit. Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt it in Rust and released it as open source. Either all software is dead or the US copyright laws are about to receive an update. getartcraft.com/apps

A little scoop before Oct 7, when ICANN publishes 1,000+ applications for new top-level domains: one of them is .bsky! It's a long road (18 to 24 months), but if it goes through, handles like alice.bsky become possible.

Hi protocol friends! I've been cooking up a Very Large PDS (vlpds) implementation capable of scaling up to billions of accounts and down to just one. It uses Object Storage as its only state, supports HA operation, live scaling up and down, is feature-complete with the reference PDS, and is FOSS.

An atproto PDS whose only durable storage is an object store. Any node serves any request, one node can run a personal server for free, and a few nodes can carry all of Bluesky's write load.

Farcaster and WeChat are interesting prior art. Web-based. Key thing is when you launch mini app, you’re already logged in and have some kind of IAP. Low friction distribution + user acquisition.

One thing that seems likely: times of transition are often turbulent.

Vaclav Smil’s “Energy and Civilization” + “Grand Transitions” really drive home what an exceptional and strange time we have been born into. Also returning to histories of Industrial Revolution and 20th c, because this is *at least* an Industrial Revolution-scale thing.

Strange how many problems human language turned out to be able to solve before LLMs, when you think about it (and math is also a language)… One of the very few truly open-ended systems we have created.

This is kind of what happened with claude code… Massive upside for the company, but little lock-in. Switching to codex is easy. The aggregator move would have been “run your app on our infra”/“don’t call us, we’ll call you” (something they’re trying to roll back and correct w Claude Cloud).

Adversarial interop and open source can emerge during the early stages of disruption for this reason. You don’t have time to lock down and extract every little thing when there’s a huge greenfield in front of you. Moving fast has higher upside, even if you cede vast tracts of territory.
