I think this will be one of the defining images of the Premier League's void years: a proudly working class fanbase celebrating that the ruling family of an oppressive regime had hired a barrister on £10,000-an-hour to try and prevent them suffering consequences for their cheating. Embarrassing.

Burnham’s success as mayor of Manchester was largely underpinned by the massive investment in construction by - among other insalubrious nation funds - UAE. He probably feels he owes them. I hope the PL is strong enough to resist him if he intervenes to reduce City’s punishment.

… but really, feels like we’ve reached a point where there is no real option but expulsion. The Premier League is a members organisation and we have a member that for a decade was not playing by the same rules as the others. There is and can be no trust there anymore. The bad egg needs binning.

Now we know the extent of Man City’s cheating - faking income of £900m+, surely that amount should be their financial penalty- £900m to be distributed to the many clubs they damaged. Plus a sporting penalty of multi year significant points deductions.
