Due to my job as an electrical engineer in R&D in large-scale industry, I ended up in geology in 2010 out of interest and learned a lot there. My knowledge about natural climate change has also increased as a result.

More than 60 quakes have been recorded in the S Tyrrhenian Sea, in an area spanning several dozen km. "We are detecting a seismic sequence, & the data is being updated minute by minute," seismologist Mr. Stramondo, director of the INGV Earthquake Department
The strongest quake was the M 5.5 one at 12:19 PM, which occurred at a depth of 9 km & a distance of 98 km NE of Bagheria. Since that quake, 35 others with magnitudes greater than 2 have been recorded, all located in the narrowest area of the ongoing sequence, with a radius of about 15 km. The strongest, with a M 4.6, occurred at 3:55 PM. The driving force behind the seismic sequence, the seismologist continued, is the "compressive mechanism due to the contact between the African & Eurasian plates."
Moving N, the former pushes on the latter, resulting in a crustal earthquake, a quake that occurs within the Earth's crust, the outermost & most rigid part of our planet. Due to their relative proximity to the surface, quakes of this type are felt even at great distances. This has also happened in this case, with reports reaching the INGV from all over Sicily, from Messina & Palermo to Catania, Syracuse, & Agrigento, as reported by the INGV's "Did you feel the quake?" service.
The M 5.5 triggered a tsunami alert immediately after the event was recorded, as required by the international protocol also followed by the INGV TsunamiCenter, 1 of 4 such centers worldwide & responsible for the Mediterraneantsunamialert. "Our center," Stramondo added, "was the 1st to use the new probabilistic model, rather than the deterministic one that had been used until now."
The decision to develop a more precise model emerged after the quake in Turkey 2023: "We then realized that the model could be improved to drastically reduce false alarms," thanks to statistical analyses based on thousands of models. The alert, Stramondo said, was closed about an hour after the M 5.5: "We detected no changes in sea level, there was no tsunami."

It doesn't seem all that easy to get information ... so far there have been almost 50 earthquakes in this swarm, and at 3:55 PM CEST there was another M 5.0 A tsunami warning was issued, later lifted But I found an article and posted it translated www.ilfattoquotidiano.it/2026/10/23/t... 6/n

Seismic event in the province of Catania, ML 3.8, October 21, 2026

An earthquake with a Richter magnitude (ML) of 3.8 was recorded by the National Seismic Network today, October 21, 2026, at 8:49 AM Italian time. The epicenter was located 7.1 km west of Milo and 7.9 km northwest of Zafferana Etnea, at a depth of 4 km. The city of Catania lies approximately 27 km south of the epicenter.

This event occurred in an area that has not historically experienced very strong earthquakes—unlike the eastern and southern sectors of the region—though numerous events with a magnitude of less than 5 have been recorded there in the past.

Based on data received thus far, the earthquake was felt across the province of Catania and parts of the province of Messina. These reports are corroborated by a macroseismic intensity map, generated from over 77 questionnaires submitted via the website www.hsit.it, which is being continuously updated.

KILAUEA (VNUM #332010)
19°25'16" N 155°17'13" W, Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Summit Observations:

Multiple overflows from the south vent were observed through the night starting at 10:16 PM HST. There were 15 overflows that lasted less than 5 minutes and were small, advancing less than 100 feet (30 m) from the vent. Then at 5:10 a.m. HST, a high-volume overflow coated the entire area within 300 feet (100 m) of the vent with pahoehoe in 10 minutes. This was followed by the current south vent overflows which began and 5:56 a.m. HST and continue at this time. A small dome fountain within the vent has been feeding multiple channels of pahoehoe that cover the near vent area and extend near a half a mile (about a kilometer) from the vent. The volume of lava and the size of the dome fountain appear to wax and wane over time, but continues to feed vigorous overflow channels. Spatter from all three vents (north, south, and west) was also observed overnight, as well consistent glow and occasional flames.

Irregular tremor bursts gave way to more continuous tremor around 6 a.m. HST, about the same time the south vent became continuously active and drainback events stopped. Twenty-one earthquakes were recorded over the past day, mostly in the southern and eastern regions of the summit region of Kīlauea.

Summit tiltmeters have shown minor changes in tilt, with an overall slight inflationary trend since Wednesday. GPS stations on opposite sides of Halemaʻumaʻu (CRIM and UWEV) show a small increase in length since the end of September suggesting longer-term inflation of the summit magma reservoir.

Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Summary: Intermittent overflows from the north vent resumed yesterday and continued through day; less frequent overnight. Kīlauea's summit remains at a high level of pressurization with changes in eruptive activity or location within the summit region possible.

Summit Observations:

Overflows from the north vent resumed yesterday at 11:08 AM HST and continued intermittently throughout the day with 12 recorded by sundown, as well as one overflow from the south vent. Numerous instances of spatter from all three vents (north, south, and west) were also observed. Conditions overnight led to difficult viewing, nonetheless spatter was visible from all vents, as well as an additional overflow accompanied by gas jetting from the north vent at 4:46 AM. Glow and flames from the vents also continued consistently through the night.

Summit tremor continued throughout the day, with a return to irregular tremor bursts around 12:15 PM. In the past 24 hours, there were 20 shallow earthquakes located across the summit region of Kīlauea, predominantly in the south caldera region.

Summit tiltmeters have shown minor changes in tilt, with an overall slight inflationary trend over the past day. GPS stations on opposite sides of Halemaʻumaʻu (CRIM and UWEV) show a small increase in length since the end of September suggesting longer-term inflation of the summit magma reservoir.

During inter-episode pauses, the sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission rate from the summit typically varies between 1,000 and 5,000 tonnes per day. Plumes of volcanic gas are visible from the vents in day-time webcam views. Winds are currently forecast from the north-northeast through today.
