Russia plans to prosecute German journalists in absentia

In August, a German journalist asked at a press conference in Belgrade how Europe could help Ukraine "kill more Russian soldiers." The FAZ correspondent was subsequently arrested "in absentia." Now, charges have been filed.

Russian authorities have concluded their investigation against Michael Martens, the Balkan correspondent for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ). Martens is to be charged in absentia, reports the Russian state news agency TASS.

In August, Martens asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a press conference in Serbia what Europeans could do to help Ukraine kill more Russian soldiers. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) later stated that the question had been "misleadingly worded." It was not the newspaper's editorial line "that as many Russian soldiers as possible should be killed."

A criminal case was opened against Martens in Moscow. At the time, TASS reported that Russian authorities had launched an investigation for "incitement to hatred or enmity." If convicted, the journalist could face up to six years in a penal colony. The current TASS report states that Martens was "arrested in absentia on August 26 for incitement to hatred."

No delivery, no stock.
The state news agency claims that Martens asked Zelenskyy what European countries could do to "kill more Russians." In fact, Martens had corrected himself. His question, posed in English, was: "Can you tell us Europeans what we can specifically do to help you kill more Russians—more Russian soldiers, of course?"

Convictions in absentia are common in Russia: Düsseldorf carnival float builder Jacques Tilly was sentenced in absentia to eight and a half years in a penal colony for satirical criticism of Russian leader Putin. Since Germany, of course, will not extradite Tilly to Russia, such a verdict has virtually no effect.

Summit Observations:

Both the north and south vents in Halemaʻumaʻu showed strong glow and flames in overnight webcam imagery, with minor amounts of spatter erupted by both vents. Robust plumes of volcanic gas emanate from both vents in day-time webcam views.

In the past 24 hours, there were 7 shallow earthquakes located across the summit region of Kīlauea. The Uēkahuna tiltmeter (UWD) recorded no appreciable change in tilt over the past day. GPS stations on opposite sides of Halemaʻumaʻu (CRIM and UWEV) show a small increase in length since the end of September.

During inter-episode pauses, the sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission rate from the summit typically varies between 1,000 and 5,000 tonnes per day. Winds are currently forecast from the northeast.

"On a scale never seen before"

The Director of the Icelandic Meteorological Office says that disruption of the Atlantic overturning circulation due to climate change could have serious consequences for weather patterns around the world, although there is still uncertainty about the development. She emphasizes the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, keep climate issues in the discussion and encourages people to examine their diet, although a vegetarian diet is not necessarily the solution.

Hildigunnur Thorsteinsson, Director General of the Icelandic Meteorological Office, will participate in a seminar on the Atlantic Ocean Overturning Circulation (AMOC) at the Arctic Circle, at 4 pm in Harpa today. She discussed the topic with mbl.is.

She tells scientists it's clear how to issue clear yellow or red weather warnings, but it can be more complicated to communicate warnings about climate change on this scale with this uncertainty, like the issue of the tipping cycle, in human terms so that the public and decision-makers accept the information and work with it, "so that we create a better Earth for all of us and our descendants in particular."

"What we need to turn around"
The AMOC is a cycle of ocean currents that gives us the climate we know here in the Northern Hemisphere. The Gulf Stream is part of this cycle. When talking about climate change, it can be assumed that most people know that the Earth is warming and that it is having a variety of effects, but one of the biggest effects that people are feeling right now is that weather is not as predictable as it used to be.

"We set up our entire life, our entire society on Earth, and have evolved over millennia as humans with predictable weather patterns, because the Earth's cycle was in balance. But in recent years we have thrown it out of balance by releasing greenhouse gases in large quantities and on a scale that has never been seen before.

This is what will disrupt all of our lives and this is what we need to turn around," says Hildigunnur.

The ocean circulation is one element that has been thrown into imbalance due to melting ice, ocean acidification, warming, and changes in precipitation. When the circulation is thrown out of balance in this way, the climate in the Northern Hemisphere and elsewhere in the world changes, with potentially drastic consequences.

There is still a lot of uncertainty about exactly when or if, and how, this will happen. But what has changed in recent years is that it has become more likely that we will see these drastic consequences. While this is still considered unlikely, the consequences are so great that it is necessary to take mitigating measures.

"And that's where we stand with AMOC," says Hildigunnur.

"That's the solution"
When asked what can be done, she says that the first thing to do is to reduce emissions.

"That is the solution," she reiterates. Then we need to continue to take the Paris Agreement seriously and work with its goals, and conduct more research to better understand the problem.

It is also important to keep climate change in the discussion, but Hildigunn's assessment, based on recent research, is that the majority of people are still very concerned about climate change but feel like they are in the minority because the seriousness of the public debate has diminished.

"We need to somehow lift up this silent majority, because there's not much being said about it, so that it comes back into the spotlight a little bit," she says. "Maybe it's not enough to understand. You have to somehow connect with things in order to do something about them."

"We always need to move forward"
When asked what ordinary people can do on a daily basis, Hildigunnur says diet is a good place to start.

"I'm not saying everyone should go vegan. But just looking at the latest dietary recommendations, more fiber, less red meat, more vegetables," she says.

"If we can do that and at the same time work to change how we produce this, and do it as sustainably as we can, it would have a huge impact on the Earth's tolerance levels and where we are heading with the planet. It's a real win-win, we both become healthier, we feel better and the planet feels better."

"Then the other thing is, don't think we're in the minority. Don't think others aren't concerned about this. Let's keep encouraging. There's only so much we as individuals can do, but governments are always leading the way in this and we always need to keep going and keep this in the discussion. What can we do as a country, as a city, as a people? Wherever we are."

Das Grundgesetz beinhaltet spezifische Mechanismen, um Verfassungsfeinde zu bekämpfen:

• Die Ewigkeitsklausel (Artikel 79 Abs. 3): Die Kernprinzipien des Staates – allen voran die unantastbare Menschenwürde (Artikel 1), die Demokratie, der Rechtsstaat und die Bundesstaatlichkeit – dürfen niemals abgeschafft werden, selbst nicht mit einer Zweidrittelmehrheit im Parlament.

• Das Parteiverbot (Artikel 21 Abs. 2): Parteien, die die freiheitliche demokratische Grundordnung aktiv-kämpferisch bekämpfen, können vom Bundesverfassungsgericht verboten werden.

• Verwirkung von Grundrechten (Artikel 18): Wer die Freiheit der Meinungsäußerung oder andere Grundrechte zum Kampf gegen die freiheitliche demokratische Grundordnung missbraucht, kann diese Grundrechte (wie die Presse- oder Versammlungsfreiheit) durch das Bundesverfassungsgericht aberkannt bekommen.

• Institutionelle Absicherung: Jüngste Reformen (wie die Verankerung zentraler Regeln des Bundesverfassungsgerichts im Grundgesetz) wurden gezielt verabschiedet, um zu verhindern, dass Extremisten das oberste Gericht durch einfache Gesetzesänderungen schwächen oder politisch kapern können.
