The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), Etna Observatory, reports that analysis of images from the surveillance camera network indicates that the lava overflow on the upper section of the Sciara del Fuoco (see Stromboli statement from 05/10/2026 at 14:40 UTC) is no longer being fed and is cooling. Ordinary Strombolian activity continues from both the North and Central-South crater areas, alongside spattering from the North crater area at varying intensities. From a seismic perspective, the average volcanic tremor amplitude remains within the average range. Regarding explosion quakes, no significant changes have been noted since the previous update. Time series data from the tilt and GNSS networks show no significant variations.

Ordinary Strombolian activity continues from both the North and Central-South crater areas, alongside spattering from the North crater area at varying intensities. From a seismic perspective, the temporal trend of the average volcanic tremor amplitude shows no significant variations and remains within the average range. A slight increase in the occurrence rate and amplitude of explosion quakes has been noted. Time series data from the tilt and GNSS networks show no significant variations.

Sharp tremors in an active area

An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 was measured between Hamar and Skaftárkatli in Vatnajökull today.

This is stated in the announcement of the Meteorological Office.

The earthquake was measured at 12.18 today, and it is an active seismic area.

There have been no reports of the earthquake being felt in populated areas and there is no unrest.

The last earthquake of magnitude 3 or higher occurred in this area on December 10th in the series that was then underway. The largest earthquake in that series measured 3.94 on December 6th, 2025.

Several earthquakes of around magnitude 3 have occurred in the Kötluöskja crater in Mýrdalsjökull this evening. One of magnitude 3 occurred at 21:44. Bjarki Kaldalóns Friis, a natural hazard expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, says that smaller earthquakes have followed.

Geothermal energy has also been leaking into Múlakvísl since yesterday. It has happened several times this summer. There are no signs of a leak in Múlakvísl. Bjarki says that the development is being closely monitored, but currently there are no signs of volcanic unrest.

🇮🇸 🌋 Reykjanes - Svartsengi 🟨 The Veðurstofa Íslands has uploaded an 🆕 update Situation on the Reykjanes Peninsula Land uplift and magma accumulation continue ◉ Slow ground uplift continues at Svartsengi ◉ Seismic activity remains low 1/2

Deformation measurements show continued ground uplift in the Svartsengi area. Approximately four centimetres of uplift have been measured over the past three months, with the rate remaining relatively steady throughout this period.

The uplift indicates that pressure is still building at a depth of several kilometres.

The InSAR image above shows continued ground uplift at Svartsengi between 20 July and 13 September 2026. InSAR uses comparisons of satellite radar images to measure ground deformation. The black outlines mark lava fields formed during previous eruptions along the Sundhnúkur crater row and at Fagradalsfjall.

The image was produced using data from the TerraSAR-X satellite. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) provided the data through the GEO-GSNL initiative, supported by CEOS, an international forum for satellite-based Earth observation.

Magma accumulation can continue for a long time
There is no evidence that the eruptive episode along the Sundhnúkur crater row is coming to an end. The Reykjanes-Svartsengi volcanic system remains at alert level 2, “Substantially increased activity” (orange).

Before the eruptive episode can be declared over, monitoring data must show clear evidence of this over an extended period.

The Volcano Alert Level System (VALS) is used by the Icelandic Meteorological Office to communicate information about activity in Iceland's volcanic systems.

The figure below shows the signs required before the alert level can be lowered. Once the volcanic system has been returned to alert level 0, the eruptive episode can be considered over.

Wo die #CDU gerade implodiert... Ein Teil der Wählerschaft wird sich in Richtung AfD bewegen. Aber ein moralisch nicht verkommener Teil - Wähler, die für sich und ihre Kinder eine gute, sichere, lebenswerte Welt wollen - könnte bei den Grünen eine neue Heimat finden 🤜 🤛
