All the posturing from councilmembers on the budget is funny because they literally can just change it. It's funny but also sad. They're just doing it for political brownie points.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

If you need to work with AI you must fight daily to ensure you don't accidentally microwave your brain.

Guy who made the CivicTide website seems to have had his brain microwaved by AI. Won't be surprised if during this budget season we get clips of people quoting the site and saying some wacky stuff.

Growing SPD to match Denver, SF, or Boston's officer numbers would grow SPD's budget to be anywhere from 31-39% of the bugdet (from 24%). Considering the budget deficit this would mean that the rest of the budget would need to shrink anywhere from 15-24%. Nearly a 25% cut is insane!

The AIs are still dumb sometimes
GPT-6 Astra High conversation asking to implement a upload badge on photos to be uploaded. AI implements badge for all photos, even photos that have been uploaded already. I point out that this is dumb.

If Wilson had this kind of history the Seattle Times would be shouting this from the heavens. Kang shares ideology with the opinion board though so they don't care.

Note that the country is so safe that fights have to land in Cap-Haïtien rather than the capital because gangs control the main airport and shoot at planes.

Is there a local news outlet that has gotten better on the ground coverage of the new bus lane than this? Put a TV crew on a 8 bus, ask Metro if drivers on the route feel like it's faster It seems like all they want to cover is theoretical complaints from car drivers.

I do wonder if the AI code maximalists inspect the code frontier models produce. I literally use Opus 5 and Sol 5.6, all day, every day, at work and it still produces incorrect things sometimes. Letting incorrect info into a repo quickly becomes garbage in -> garbage out for future code.

It would be ironic if in the quest for artificial general intelligence, instead of AIs maximizing "paperclips", it was select humans devoting as much energy and money as possible into the goal of AGI only to still never reach the goal.

While this sounds like a lot the city settled with a different officer who sued for $950k and former Chief Diaz's suit hasn't been resolved yet. $700k for a police chief to go away with no lawsuit is cheap relatively speaking.

ROUTE 8 and DENNY WAY: starting on Saturday, buses and cars merging onto Interstate 5 won’t compete for the same lane of Denny Way. To keep traffic flowing, people driving to I-5 south from eastbound Denny Way will turn right on Boren Ave and left on Howell St instead of using Yale Ave.

@seattledot.bsky.social has announced more detailed timelines for Denny Way bus lanes! The Yale slip lane closure and Boren safety improvements will happen early August! After some repaving, the new bus lanes and westbound bus stop will be installed mid-late August! www.seattle.gov/transportati...
Phase 2 work will be done in two main stages:

First: Signs, Markings, and Temporary Street Configuration (early August)

Crew work will begin with installing new signs, pavement markings, and signal adjustments. This includes removing some parking on Boren Ave in the block south of Denny Way, and on Minor Ave north of Howell St, as well as adding left-turn restrictions from westbound Denny Way onto Lenora St and Boren Ave.
Starting August 1, people driving to I-5 South should turn right on Boren Ave (see Phase 2 Map, above).
During this stage, crews will also temporarily close the eastbound curb lane on Denny Way between Minor Ave and Stewart St, as well as install interim barriers at Yale Ave and Denny Way to permanently restrict right turns from eastbound Denny Way onto Yale Ave (see graphic below).
A map showing new street design from Minor Ave to Stewart St as described in "Phase 2 East" section
Between the first and second stages, a private developer at 1200 Stewart St will repave the two southern lanes of Denny Way between Minor Avenue N and Stewart St. Once this work is complete, SDOT crews will begin the second stage.

Second: Bus Lane Installation and Signal Work (mid-late August)

Once the initial street adjustments are complete, crews will paint and finalize the new eastbound bus lane, install a new westbound bus stop between Minor Ave and Stewart St, and complete signal work to restrict the left turn from eastbound Denny Way onto Dexter Avenue N.

Note that the barely visible pink dot in the corner for WA has our state Republicans and billionaires up in arms.
Cartogram showing the state tax revenue sources of each state. The map is shaped like the United States. Nationwide 44% of state revenue comes from income tax, 12% comes from other taxes, and 45% comes from sales tax. Income tax is colored pink, other is colored grey, and sales is colored yellow. Washington State is in the corner of the map with its square mostly yellow colored with a literal 1 by 1 pixel in the top right corner showing the state's new capital gains tax.A zoomed in picture of the Washington State's tax rectangle, the income tax revenue is now about 3 pixels big.

Today in the Seattle Times. This person wants every house in Seattle to cost $3 million dollars.
From the Seattle Times Rants and Raves section: RANT to city zoning that continues to promote the destruction of family-sized housing. No wonder single-family houses are so expensive — the demand is there, yet the zoning to encourage housing for families to be built is not.

Asking about Pratt definitely was trying to push an agenda but I'd love to see someone dig into and write up the current understanding of the "right wing media network" in Seattle. Like why did I see a picture of Suarez wearing a "Pratt for LA" hat in Seattle? How is Kim connected to the network?

Remember Westneat is a joke. In his latest piece he said "One factor is Seattle has been shedding the “light” from light rail. ... the premise [was] a sort of combo subway train and streetcar, was that it could be installed relatively cheaply on city streets and in road medians."
seattletimes.com
Maybe the light rail system we’ve got is good enough
Light rail is finally cooking in the Seattle area. It coincides with an existential crisis over building expansion lines for the future. At what point do we say "it's good," and stop?
