I am angry tonight. Because tonight ICE shot a New Yorker. They shot a New Yorker while his five year old child was in the car. ICE makes this city less safe. We want them out. Now.

Stop complaining. Just like $7/gallon diesel, $7/pound ground beef, and Iran "taking out" Los Angeles and San Diego, millions of Americans losing access to affordable prescription drugs is just, in Trump's words, another "small price to pay" to keep the country and world safe.

Yeah. But nobody in Texas was watching these other games while the Cowboys and Texans were playing, so seems like a stunning waste of money either way. (I think the real explanation is that the consultants get a taste of the ad buys, and that’s all that matters.)

Same at SeaTac Airport. Taxis are reliably less expensive and there's never a wait. Also, the price doesn't go up the closer you get to the taxi stand. (Seriously. Check the Uber price from the tarmac upon landing. It's always much cheaper than the price you pay when you're ready to book.)

The baby boom was a brief demographic blip. It’s pretty indisputable that there is a multi-century inverse relationship between economic development and fertility rates, the most likely explanation being that economic development empowers women, and empowered women choose to have smaller families.

Goldy @goldy.horsesass.org · 03/10/2026
In general, I find the media’s attention on potential pro-natalist policies to be disturbing. The overarching inverse correlation is between economic development and fertility rates. As nations develop fertility rates fall—likely because economically empowered women choose to have fewer children.

Goldy @goldy.horsesass.org · 03/10/2026
This is such a classically neoclassical economic approach. Take two factors—in this case, homeownership rates and fertility rates—explore the relationship and draw policy conclusions. Easy! Unfortunately the real world is far more complex and its outcomes emergent.

I've seen a lot of coverage of this NBER working paper and I find the conclusions... problematic. I've read the paper. What the researchers find is a *correlation* between homeownership and birthrates during the baby-boom years. I find their causal claims unconvincing.

And so it continues... Our economic debates seem utterly disconnected from the reality. That reality: This is an economy mostly creating healthcare jobs, and it does so month after month, and everything else is just noise.
Line chart titled "Effectively all of the net job creation has been in healthcare and social assistance, and jobs are shrinking in the rest of the economy" showing change in non-farm payrolls since January 2025 through September 2026. Healthcare and social assistance added 998,000 jobs with consistent growth throughout the period, while the rest of the economy lost 222,000 jobs, meaning all net job creation came from healthcare. The rest of the economy showed particular weakness from May through August 2025 when losses reached 218,000 jobs. This striking divergence reveals an unusual concentration where one sector's growth of roughly 48,000 jobs per month has offset persistent contraction across all other industries combined.
