In a less insane time, if it was discovered that the President of the United States said this privately to their AG, it would’ve triggered an all-encompassing, impeachable corruption scandal. Here, Trump is saying it publicly and it’s just another Saturday.

It’s elementary. If only one side is pushing it will get a lot of its way. The only workable remedial action is to make clear to all relevant parties that there are two sides pushing. And act accordingly.

NEW: Judge Xinis largely rejects DOJ's opposition to discovery requests in the Abrego Garcia case, accusing the Trump admin of "a willful and bad faith refusal to comply with discovery obligations," citing their continued denial to acknowledge what the Supreme Court ordered.
I. Ruling on General Objections 1. “False Premise” Objections. Defendants object to certain discovery because they claim the requests are based on the “false premise that the United States can or has been ordered to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s release from custody in El Salvador.”2 See Defs.’ Objs. & Resps. to Pls.’ First Set of Expedited Interrogs., ECF No. 98-1 at 3. Defendants—and their counsel—well know that the falsehood lies not in any supposed “premise,” but in their continued mischaracterization of the Supreme Court’s Order. That Order made clear that this Court “properly required the Government to ‘facilitate’ Abrego Garcia’s release from custody in El Salvador and to ensure that his case is handled as it would have been had he not been improperly sent to El Salvador.” See Noem v. Abrego Garcia, 604 U.S. –– (2025), slip op. at 2; see also Abrego Garcia v. Noem, No. 25-1404, 2025 WL 1135112, at *1 (4th Cir. Apr. 17, 2025). Defendants’ objection reflects a willful and bad faith refusal to comply with discovery obligations. The objection is overruled. Defendants are therefore ordered to supplement their answers in full compliance with the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Their answers must include facts responsive to the requests, not oblique and incomplete, non-specific characterizations. See Fed. R. Civ. P. 33(b)(3) (requiring that each interrogatory be answered “fully”)

The battle over US AID illustrates how much power Musk has accumulated, how his exercise of that power is driven by ignorance & conspiracy theories. See, e.g. Musk's lie that 50 million was spent on giving condoms to Hamas. Or his claims that 90% of US AID spending is wasted.
Here is an explanation from Rachel Bonnefield and Justin Sandefur.

This is a wildly incorrect and misleading interpretation of a different statistic—that 10 percent of USAID payments are made directly to organizations in the developing world. The remaining 90 percent includes all the goods and services that USAID, American companies, and faith-based organizations deliver in kind, from HIV drugs to emergency food aid, malaria bed nets, and treatment for acute malnutrition.

Here are some basic questions that the media & Congress could ask: Can public & private businesses trust Musk with their data? How many of the officials accessing sensitive data have security clearance? Do older adults know that Elon Musk now controls payment of their Social Security & Medicare?
Follow the Money, But Also the Data
The usual adage in these things is to follow the money, and see who benefits. But we should also watch for control over data. For tech bros, data is the means of control. At last count, Musk employees1 have control over sensitive student aid data, small business administration data, federal employee data (including data from job applicants), social security and tax refund data, and are seeking data from the Department of Labor (think the Bureau of Labor Statistics), and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Data (weather data). At the same time that they are hoovering up this data, public data sources are being shut down.
