Based on what I am seeing now, I am officially concerned. And I'm not the only one: One federal scientist recently reflected that in their view we've entered "If you see something, say something" territory. I fully agree, and this month's data provides further evidence.

The fact that nobody alive today has seen an event of this magnitude should really make us stop and think. And yes, I know El Niño is a natural cycle. But that doesn’t make records like this any less remarkable…or any less concerning.

Hottest weather in two years looking likely for much of the Southwest (including interior California) starting in about a week, with well above-normal temperatures potentially continuing through mid-August.
US Hazards Outlook
NWS Climate Prediction Center College Park MD
300 PM EDT July 24 2026

Synopsis: Strong mid-level high pressure is forecast to bring a prolonged heat wave to the West through the beginning of August. Antecedent dryness along with the likelihood of above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation during the next two weeks supports an increased risk for the Rapid Onset of Drought to parts of the Great Plains and Corn Belt. A moisture surge associated with a tropical cyclone tracking northwest across the East Pacific along with the ongoing/predicted heat wave favors a renewal of an enhanced Monsoon during early August.

Hazards
High risk of extreme heat for portions of the Southwest, Great Basin, and California, Sat-Sun, Aug 1-2.
Moderate risk of extreme heat for much of the Southern Plains, Southwest, Great Basin, and California, Sat-Tue, Aug 1-4.
Slight risk of extreme heat for most of the western two-thirds of the CONUS and Southeast U.S., Sat-Fri, Aug 1-7.
Slight risk of extreme heat for the Midwest, Wed-Fri, Aug 5-7.
Slight risk of heavy precipitation for parts of the Southeast, Sat-Sun, Aug 1-2.
Slight risk of heavy precipitation for parts of the Desert Southwest, Sun-Fri, Aug 2-7.
Rapid onset drought (ROD) possible for parts of the Great Plains and Corn Belt.

"Three Hundred Things a Bright Girl Can Do" by Lilla Elizabeth Kelley, published in 1903 by Dana Estes and Company. The distinctive cover art was designed by American artist Amy Sacker. I am such a sucker for beautiful antique book covers. They just don't make them like this anymore.
It is a first edition hardcover, bound in red cloth with black and gilt lettering. The book content covers various educational activities and skills for young women of the early 20th century.

Per-contact transmission risk was previously estimated as 3.4% in household (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17471425/), so below could imply [big assumption] a single case on average infects roughly 20x0.034 = 0.7 others per day infectious on cruise. Can see why cluster can occur.

Solution is betternagricultural practices AND better pesticides that are laser focused at protecting crops against very specific bugs and diseases while also not hurting these beneficial bug bugs we all need. Is it hard? Yes. Can we figure it out and do it? Yes.

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again. www.nature.com/immersive/d4...
This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024–25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.
