It's very easy for media to find pro-AI teachers willing to speak in public, but harder to find skeptics. Teachers, like workers in other industries, know that expressing caution in public can harm their career. In private though, only 16% of BCTF teachers think that AI helps students.

It’s the hot new thing in tech, and it’s where all the jobs are. Students who don’t learn to use it fall behind. That’s the narrative AI companies are pitching, but according to NYT reporter Natasha Singer, it’s also how the tech industry has built its influence in classrooms for the past 15 years.

Really interesting programme and interview. My jaw dropped at the 31% of learners, who took the PISA test, who were below Level 2 in reading. Lev 2 being what the OECD class as the baseline of proficiency in reading to be able to participate in society. In 2015 it was 16%. In England it is 16% now.

But how much time do you give to prove impact of educational reform? Because in the meantime, based on PISA results, which the WG place great importance on, we've had two decades of learners in Wales who appear to be underachieving when compared to their peers in other UK countries.

Two different ministers saying that the results are not where we want them to be. How they must focus on literacy and numeracy (what about science?), investing in our teachers and a new curriculum, but that basically education change takes time to have impact.

So, I thought I'd have a look at what other Welsh edu ministers have said in response to our continual decline in PISA results. Response to PISA 2022 - (BBC) The Welsh government said there would be a "renewed national focus" on reading, numeracy and science.

Looks like maths and reading have been in decline since before their new curriculum in 2010. Reading slightly more ‘turbulent’ since its introduction but maths appears to be in a pretty steady decline.
