I understand the desire to speak well of the dead, and am sure that Archer, like all of us, was a mix of good and bad. But the tendency to indulge dishonesty, so long as it's by a loveable scamp, has done real damage to British politics. We should be a bit wary of the "isn't he a card?" thing.

One reason why I am a nut for devolution is this: central government ministers shouldn't spend their working hours thinking about the correct design of bus stops.

I think the talk of a ‘revolving door’ and the way in which permanent settlement is clearly described as a negative development forgets that these are human beings, wanting the best lives for themselves. And I’d add the right never has to make these concessions.

Free Enterprise? All in favour of it. Thatcher promoted crony faux capitalism and sold off the country's assets to friends at discount prices. Western Values? I'm in favour. Supporting murderous fascists like Pinochet, Botha and De Klerk was more Thatcher's style. The "glorious 80s" is a fantasy

I'm a bit younger than you, so I remember the 70s as grim (3 day week, prog music). But remember the 80s as worse. The shoulder pads big hair Thatcher times they eulogize were essentially a London effect. Rest of us had strikes, hardship and oppression. Thatcher was NOT a fan of the rule of law

City fans of old would be saying "of course this is going to fall apart. Its City" but still keep on supporting them. I was always impressed by their committment even when they were in the 3rd division (whatever it was called at the time).

20. Finally, it is so important to respect the water and acknowledge the dangers involved for those crossing the English Channel in open boats and rough weather today. The hostility towards RNLI crews selflessly preventing loss of life must be utterly condemned. Support the RNLI here: rnli.org 20/20
