Read my piece on the recent devastating Nepal floods!

Tirthankar Ghosh @glacioverse.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
I wrote a piece with one of my colleagues for @theconversation.com What we know about the event? What do we learn from past? and what’s the future of rock-ice avalanches across the Himalaya? theconversation.com/the-collapse...
theconversation.com
The collapse of a mountainside triggered Nepal’s devastating floods. As the region’s mountains heat up, it won’t be the last
Rock-ice avalanches like the one which caused catastrophe in Nepal and Tibet (China) are not new. But warmer conditions make them more likely.

An article was published in The Hindu- a leading daily newspaper, under the Science section, based on my latest published research paper. The article was written by Hirra Azmat. We are continuously working to gain more understanding of how these glaciers in Ladakh are evolving with climate change.

This could be one of the first documented timelapse photography of a surging glacier ! This movie shows the snout of Variegated Glacier in Alaska. This glacier is about 20 km length. The glacier surged over about 2 yrs, in 1982-1983. It is known to surge every 16-26 years youtu.be/GXbztmkmeSs?...

A massive Alaska landslide in 2025 triggered a tsunami wave that surged 1,580 feet up fjord walls — one of the highest ever recorded.

Alaska’s near-record landslide tsunami sent a wave 1,580 feet up the fjord walls – and left clues for building a warning system
The tsunami struck just 12 hours after a cruise ship had left the fjord, rattling the tourism industry.

The new glacier inventory for the Hindu Kush Himalaya maps over 63,700 glaciers, one of the planet’s largest freshwater reserves. It reveals that these glaciers are shrinking under accelerating climate stress.

Cryospheric geomorphology is amazing! 😍 Here is a massive and delicately carved Neoglacial moraine (Réou d'Arsine Gl.), the lower part of which has evolved into a magnificent rock glacier with concentric lobes 🧊🌊 The whole being heavily laden with snow, even on the steepest sections! ❄️
