After two field expeditions and one year in the making, very pleased to share my second paper from my PhD is now published! ⛰️ We obtained the first dataset of ice-contact lake physical conditions in the Himalaya throughout the critical monsoon and glacier melt season ⬇️ doi.org/10.1029/2024...

Monsoon and Glacial Meltwater Input Drive Seasonal Cooling of a Himalayan Ice‐Contact Lake
Lake surface temperatures exceeded 9°C at the surface, and were consistently warmer close to the glacier front, driven by convection Monsoon-specific meteorological conditions and input of glacia...

Glaciers are melting at an alarming rate, threatening lives and livelihoods. How can we minimise the impact? Leeds academics Duncan Quincey and Lauren Rawlins, with alum Kenton Cool, are searching for answers on our latest How To Fix… podcast. Listen: listen.podmasters.uk/HTFCleanAir?...

New lecturer position available with us at Leeds Geography: its a very supportive school with a vibrant and varied group of ecology and global change scientists, and it's a good place to live, with six national parks in easy reach. Do apply! jobs.leeds.ac.uk/vacancy.aspx...

A busy couple of weeks for the Losing their Cool team - we've drilled, cored, installed thermistors & erected an AWS, all at 6500m beneath the Lhotse Face. Next challenge is to get a flight out of Lukla 😄 @matt-peacey.bsky.social @climatom.bsky.social @unileedsnews.bsky.social @envleeds.bsky.social

The LtC team is at Gorak Shep, just a short walk from Everest Base Camp. Our equipment is somewhere between Kathmandu and here... hoping for a safe delivery by heli sometime in the next few days. @envleeds.bsky.social @matt-peacey.bsky.social @annvrowan.bsky.social @unileedsnews.bsky.social

Been a mixed couple of days here in Nepal. Some stunning weather but the trekking is getting harder. We are now one day from Everest basecamp and starting our work proper. Following that its up to the western Cwm to start drilling @duncanquincey.bsky.social @annvrowan.bsky.social

Days 5 and 6 of Losing their Cool and we've arrived at Dingboche, sat beneath Ama Dablam. We've been sampling more streams for Hi-RISE, acclimatising, and admiring the incredible views @annvrowan.bsky.social @matt-peacey.bsky.social @envleeds.bsky.social

It's not every day you wake up to a view of Nuptse, Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. Nice to have a rest day at Dingboche today, as I am starting to really feel the altitude. Tomorrow, we press on, soon getting over 5000 meters above sea level. @annvrowan.bsky.social @duncanquincey.bsky.social

And we're off! First field season for Losing their Cool. Heading up to Khumbu with the hope of drilling in the Western Cwm. We're interested in the firn, and specifically whether melt and refreezing can account for the warm ice temps we've previously measured below! #LtC #IYGP #Glaciers2025

It’s the first-ever #WorldGlaciersDay! Glaciers are critical to life, yet climate changes causes them to disappear at an alarming rate. #ClimateAction is key to protecting them & supporting those who rely on glaciers. www.un.org/en/observanc...
The image shows a snow-covered mountain range at night, with a dark sky filled with stars. The text reads: “Glaciers are critical to life.” The UN Environment Programme logo is positioned in the upper right corner.

On this first-ever World Glacier Day, we are reminded of an undeniable reality: the glaciers of the #HinduKushHimalaya (HKH) region—our planet’s “Third Pole”—are melting at an alarming rate. #Glacier2025 #IYGP2025

Today marks the first ever #WorldGlaciersDay ❄️ Glaciers are the water towers of the world, supplying freshwater to over half of humanity, but they are at the frontline of the climate crisis. Find out about the important research and glacier initiatives that Leeds academics are involved with 👇🧊
