William Colgan @glacierbytes.bsky.social · 03/10/2026I’m thinking of my U.S. research colleagues as their funding dries up. This isn’t just a financial crisis, it’s political decisions creating an existential moment for U.S. science. Many people are simply waiting — and hoping — this will pass, but returning to ‘the norm’ isn’t guaranteed. 🥹 132

William Colgan @glacierbytes.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Stopping regulation of climate-polluting gases from U.S. power plants would be profoundly short-sighted. These emissions harm public health today, and put future generations at greater climate risk. 031

William Colgan @glacierbytes.bsky.social · 19/08/2026Engineering the ice sheets to limit their sea-level rise contribution is a drastic idea, but it could be on the menu in an ‘all of the above’ response to accelerating climate change. William Colgan @glacierbytes.bsky.social · 19/08/2026Yes, American science continues to trundle headfirst into an “evolve or die” era. Thankfully, lots of bright climate folks are finding ways to move the ball forward without relying on the U.S. government. 💙✊ 052
William Colgan @glacierbytes.bsky.social · 10/08/2026Calling themselves ‘Greenland Energy’ is simply Greenland-washing old fashioned Texas-based oil-and-gas exploration. William Colgan @glacierbytes.bsky.social · 27/07/2026With so much happening in the world, it's easy to lose sight of the steady creep of climate change. But every so often, it forces its way back onto the front burner, forcing us to consider our collective climate trajectory. 👀 131
William Colgan @glacierbytes.bsky.social · 25/07/2026It would be poignant — and easy! — to make a montage of people going about their normal lives with wildfires looming in the background. Perhaps a fitting homage to our climate inaction. 🥺 ‘Golf under fire’ is almost ten years old now! 1115

William Colgan @glacierbytes.bsky.social · 18/07/2026Yup. Canadian wildfires are expected to worsen in the future, as our warming climate increases their frequency and severity. This is pretty much a statement of fact. Sadly. 0177
William Colgan @glacierbytes.bsky.social · 15/07/2026Yes! Wildfire smoke seems to be everywhere at the moment. Here’s the Anthropocene sunset in Eastern Ontario this evening. 😶🌫️ 110
William Colgan @glacierbytes.bsky.social · 15/07/2026Sadly, it’s no surprise that climate change is making El Niño events more ferocious. 🌊 Here’s IPCC AR6 Box 11.4 saying that extreme El Niños occur more frequently in a warming world. ⤵️ Still, the exceedance magnitude of this summer’s event beyond all previous events is eye opening. 👀 0147

William Colgan @glacierbytes.bsky.social · 14/07/2026This heavy-handed policy is seeking to turn back the clock on years of international scientific collaboration. Climate change doesn’t recognize borders or geopolitics. Such global challenges demand global collaboration. 060

William Colgan @glacierbytes.bsky.social · 02/07/2026Yes, Arctic wildfires are ‘new’, and sadly they form a positive feedback with climate change. Increasing wildfire activity is increasing the vulnerability of permafrost to thaw, accelerating the release of long-stored greenhouse gases. This is a feature, not a glitch, of the Anthropocene. 🔥📈🔥 093
