We are hosting an open house in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, on Wedesday October 7th 2026. The event gives people the opportunity to meet our ice-sheet scientists and traverse vehicles, and learn a little more about the FirnMelt project. Funded by @erc.europa.eu

ERC Synergy Grant: Der Weg des Schmelzwassers auf Grönlands Gletschern - AWI
Der oberste Teil des Grönländischen Eisschildes besteht an den meisten Stellen aus Firn – einer Art komprimierter Schnee mit unzähligen Lufteinschlüssen. Wenn im Sommer Schnee und Eis schmelzen, saugt dieser einen Großteil des Schmelzwassers auf wie ein Schwamm und schützt so die Eismassen unter ihm. Mit dem Anstieg der arktischen Temperaturen entsteht immer mehr Schmelzwasser, das in den Firn einsickern kann. Wie genau diese Veränderungen aussehen und – noch wichtiger - wie sie sich auf den gesamten grönländischen Eisschild auswirken, ist bisher noch nicht ausreichend verstanden. Ein internationales Team von Forschenden des Alfred-Wegener-Instituts, des Geologischen Diensts von Dänemark und Grönland sowie den Universitäten Fribourg und Utrecht will diese Wissenslücke nun im Projekt „FirnMelt“ schließen. Der europäische Forschungsrat ERC unterstützt das Vorhaben mit dem renommierten Synergy Grant in Höhe von 13 Millionen Euro.
