We walk passed buildings that leak ghosts. We are window watched. We are scratched with shadows. A psychic toll is paid for our navigations in headache, in a pressing into the back of the neck. This is our phantom reality. – #DAKilroy #Ghosts

For I am a salt-hag. I know gull gossip. I know the calling and quelling of storms. My hair is wind-braided. My lips wear rough salt kisses. I stand on the cliffs and read omens pulled by the tide. Be well and avoid my anger. – #EmilyCBanting, 1982 #FolkWitchFriday #WitchSky

Goodnight from Martin Winstanley, run away from home to play tag with ghosts in S.D. Halfwood’s wrecking yard. Goodnight from PC Dash and PC Pell, not sure whether to radio control with news that their panda car has been pelted by flints thrown by Faeries. Goodnight from Hookland.

There's a type of red clay soil you find on some parts of the county's western border. People call it 'Hookland Red'. It used to be said witches would come from the other side of the county to collect it because it had 'special properties'. I just reckon it's good for growing. – Tom Rudd #VOH

Another day spent fruitlessly searching for the Black Library in Weychester Cathedral. Another dozen subterranean rooms visited, but no new clues. It remains firmly occulted. Remains legendary, an engine of the imagination. – #MattAdams

Whilst out and about and cake-bothering booksellers, I saw my first Hookland sticker out in the wild.
A Hookland sticker on a pipe covering up some fascistic filth. The sticker reads: HERNE THE HUNTER HATES YOUR RACIST BOLLOCKS

Not to piss on anyone’s chips, but Hookland won’t be doing any ‘31 days of spookiness’ malarkey. Halloween is not that big a thing in a county that does hauntings in a matchbox every day of the year. The gothic is not tinsel on this ghost soil, it’s a bone tattoo.

Goodnight from the phantoms stuck in the cells below Coreham Crown Court, bemoaning their contemptible state of waiting upon judgement. Goodnight from Eleanor Merril, looking for tide-gifted Blood Lace blooms in the moonlit rock pools of Clinker Cove. Goodnight from Hookland.

Witchcraft is not consolatory hokum. It doesn't offer tepid answers to hard questions and even harsher circumstances. It offers us relationships with the land, its spirits and ourselves. Relationships may be rough and require work, but they get us through. – #EmilyCBanting #WitchSky

Re-introducing a Hookland childhood nightmare/beloved icon. Mr. Lookout – the ghost bear mascot of the Hookland Tourist Board's 'I-See! series of books'. The scarrer of many a child's imaginations as depicted by @tomsbrown.bsky.social. #MrLookout #Hookland
A ghost bear. A big, fat ghost bear. Wearing spectacles, holding what appears to be a bone wand. Trust me, it is one scary bear. The text says: Mr. Lookout

We were pylon pilgrims. Each transmission tower a sacred destination in the electric ley of the land. The Hum called us to walk to them, to move under their steel legs and into our temporary temples. We marched lines of electrical ecstasy. – Tattoo Labyrinth Dave #VOH

"When you are ready to part with a book..." I don't think I've ever experienced that feeling. I'm with Anthony Powell: Books do furnish a room. I wish I had a bigger room, though.

Railway workers report the signal box at Lugford as haunted. Talk of a constant presence, of being scrutinised as they work. Talk of objects being moved, levers being pulled. Odd voices down the line. A place not haunted by dread, but by unwelcome intrusion. – #CJosiffe #Ghosts

Madley is one of those villages where you have to generously apply the car’s horn to scatter clouds of chickens and children from the road. There’s always a bollock-naked drunk in the gutter, always an effigy on the green. Even by Hookland standards, it has a loose grip on reality. - #DICallaghan

Currently reading four. I take issue with Alex, though. "Reading" and "Audiobook" simply don't belong in the same sentence. Commuting? I never leave home without at least one actual book. E-books? I suppose you do actually read them, but they're not real books.

Let us walk the woods as feral possibility space. Let us walk the woods in hope of strange sights, fantastical encounters. Stories we can tell to those we love as an intimate folklore of hope that wonder is still abroad. That we still have places of constant magic. – #DAKilroy

We clearly differ in our definitions of "Leftist." And, indeed, "Nonsense." Wonderful talk, anyway. But if both your talks this year have been completely sold out, maybe a bigger venue next time? And a lectern.

Even inland, the salt-hag is tide-pulled. Gulls call her to come to shore and see the wave-polished augeries on display. Sea-seasoned winds make promises of things to be summoned at the slack. She walks to her secret cove. Her first glimpse of sea an intoxication. – #EmilyCBanting #WitchSky

Utter nonsense. Comprehensible, maybe - though an incorrectly-placed comma can change the meaning of a sentence (Let's eat Grandma vs Let's eat, Grandma) but not correct. People who don't punctuate properly are ignorant or lazy or both.

I visit neglected churches and abbeys often not out of holiness, but a desire to walk behind phantom monks, spectral nuns. If I feel closer to the numinous for treading in haunted footsteps, it is largely accidental. – #CLNolan

The stones store stories like lithic batteries. People anchor tales to them, give them folkloric titles – the Giant's Grave, the Sleepers, the Devil's Toad. In all of this, a recognition that the Long Neolithic lives in our imaginations. – Dr. K. Brophy #StandingStoneSunday
