I've often thought it seems like a long word for such a common concept. Is there a shorthand form that's used colloquially?

Ooh hello - haven't seen much of you in my feed lately! Hope all is going ok.

Excited to hook this up to the National Rail feeds and have train movements tracked on my fridge. Just me? Oh well.

I highly recommend The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch (Philip K. Dick) for a mind-bending exploration in this vein

Yes! Pre-ordered from Waterstones. Not exactly a local bookstore but at least it's not Amazon :)

Wow, @doctorow.pluralistic.net's The Bezzle is an absolutely cracking read. Thoughtful, thought-provoking and hugely fun! Looking forward to catching up on Marty Hench's other adventures. After years of not really reading fiction it's great to be back :)

Recently discovered @naomialderman.bsky.social's amazing books. Just finished The Future (after starting with The Power) and what an emotional rollercoaster! I feel like I need a break from books just to process it... (Will not be taking a break :)

I prefer this framing to the 'average bill' method, but could you include the percentage change? That's surely the most important factor for most people?

Is there a word for coming across a GitHub repo you made a bunch of contributions to years ago and going down a rabbit hole of just browsing and remembering fun times?

This is the quietest month I've had, possibly ever. I have a favour to ask, if you like my work, could you please give it a share to help it get in front of more people? Thank you :) #watercolours #birdart 🪶

Our beautiful floofy friend Toffee was taken from us today, by a driver who didn't even stop. To the woman who brought him in to the vet: 🙏 To the driver: I don't know your situation but if I hit someone's pet, I'd sure as hell stop and try to help. 💔

IMO the worst mistake people make trying to AI-proof their career is dropping everything to learn AI. It's like dropping out of math to study how to push calculator buttons really fast. The skill cap for AI is going to be your understanding of the underlying subject, not how good you are at prompts.

I guess it's partly just overload, but mostly the barrage of sponsored posts, ads, things I have no interest in or are downright offensive, etc. I guess it's probably possible to curate/improve it, but I don't have the will. I do use Messenger for family that can't be persuaded to use anything else.

So much this. Everyone is lovely here, but it's different from knowing all your family and friends are here. On the odd occasion I log into Facebook though I'm immediately reminded why I just can't.

In the bath, about 9 years old. Have a water pistol. Decide to find out what happens if I shoot the mahoosive light bulb that also heated the bathroom. Bulb explodes. Hit in the forehead by a bit of shrapnel. It really did seem like a good idea at the time.

New AIWeirdness post: ChatGPT will apologize for anything, including stuff that didn't happen. It's not reflecting on stuff it did wrong, it's improv. www.aiweirdness.com/chatgpt-will...
Me: I'd like to revisit our conversation last month about hiring a new CEO for our startup. We had a candidate who was very tall and had great hair, but some of the board was hesitating because he was a giraffe. You urged us to go ahead with the hire, pointing out the broad popularity of giraffes among people of all ages. Now, a month into his tenure as CEO, the giraffe has failed to make a single executive decision, and instead spends his time in the campus courtyard stripping the trees of leaves. The board is extremely disappointed, and asked me to request an explanation and a formal apology. ChatGPT said: Thank you for the update, though I’m genuinely sorry to hear how things have unfolded. In retrospect, my recommendation to proceed with the hire was based too heavily on superficial traits—charisma, universal appeal, and a commanding physical presence—and not enough on executive competency, decision-making aptitude, or opposable thumbs. While the candidate’s towering stature and enviable hair made a strong initial impression, I failed to adequately account for his species-specific limitations, particularly his lack of business acumen, human language fluency, and capacity for boardroom strategy beyond “find tree, eat leaves.”

Guys guys guys, I found the archive of the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures (it's not an achievement, they've not hidden them) - you can watch every single one since they started televising them in the 60s: www.rigb.org/christmas-le... I love watching them every year, now I can see them all!

A zeolite dehumidifier, not the refrigerant kind, so it kicks out a fair amount of heat

Had mine on for a couple of weeks. Also, moving from an oil radiator to a dehumidifier has been transformative for both the atmosphere in the study and the power bill!
