We used to have all sorts of signs up here for the man. 1/3 of the cars had bumper stickers in praise of him; “The speaker is my coach”. Within 2 weeks of the big press coverage, you could not find ANY references to him in the public view. Some people make the world a better place by leaving it

I’ve been out of the archaeological field for a long time so I had not heard of them but this firm came across my desk last year when we were looking to migrate to ESRI’s parcel fabric. For some reason they put in a bid. I thought it odd a CRM firm was looking to contract a pure gis job.

Dolly was the best of us. She knew who she wanted to be, she made herself that, then set about everything that everyone who came after her could as well. She didn't pull up the ladder after herself. She built a fucking staircase.

IF (and that’s a very big if) they had any actual UI/UX designers working on Pro, did they use Cow Chip Bingo to decide how this interface is supposed to work? Because it certainly smells like it.

We are constantly being told that we have to use AI and that it is amazing and makes our lives better, but the stupid plagiarism machine can’t even produce an accurate map? I have zero respect for anyone who thinks this technology is good. Clown shoe shit.

I see ESRI now has an “AI Enhanced” support tool Great! Now I can just have a computer tell me my bug is not a bug at all but a feature, without needing to take up the time of one of their employees. But they’ll still use this as a reason to jack up the cost at the end of the year.

An annoying side effect of being part of IT is when we hire a GIS position, we get a lot of pure IT people not understanding what they are applying for. I don’t care if you can configure a switch, blindfolded, hands tied behind your back, in 30°f room. We don’t need you.

Sovereignty and Open Source
Open source geospatial tools are good. I have been making some form of that argument for most of my career, especially on this blog. The mature projects are equal to or better than their proprietary alternatives. The communities that build and maintain them represent some of the best technical talent working in this space. None of that has been enough to reliably move the adoption conversations that matter.

I find it funny that ESRI likes to play up all the new features in AGOL. But they still cannot figure out how to keep me logged in like every other website can. Yeah that little Keep Me Logged-in checkbox doesn’t do a damn thing.

Let’s see on Monday morning how many people listened to me about switching over to our newest SDE database. I’m just sitting here killing all rights to all of the layers & tables. I know some people ignored our earlier emails and are going to be complaining that we shut down the server.

Dear Census Bureau, Please stop telling my townships to contact me about their boundary changes. Because most decades, they don’t 🤬 change! The last (only) time we had a change was about 120 years ago. They don’t change! At least not so often you need to tell them to contact the county every year🙄

How many times do I need to tell people around here we do not certify any maps before it finally sinks in? We are not surveyors so per state statute cannot make any claims on accuracy. The last two employees left wondering between themselves who they can get to certify our maps since I refused. 🙄🤦‍♂️

I’m used to seeing phantom trains fade in & out of existence on my aerials, but not having any water big enough for anything other than a canoe in our county I have never seen boats get the ghosting effect from stitching mosaics together. Belmont Harbor, Chicago IL maps.app.goo.gl/FDLBVYY7yXYy...
An overhead aerial photo from Google maps of a harbor with three boats moored in the harbor. Due to the process of mosaicking multiple passes of aerial image collection while the boats can pivot on their moorings between pthotos, the boats appear slightly askew as ghostly overlapping doubles of themselves.

I always love it when a village comes bitching that we do not show their new sub on our maps for 911 purposes when they still have not actually recorded the sub at with the county. How the hell are we supposed to put in a new road and addresses if we don’t know they exist? 🙄

You’d think that a company that rakes in tens to thousands of dollars per customer and has had a web based system for about 15 years would have the ability to let users change their account name without having to create a new account then transfer everything over manually. Seems kinda cheap 🤔

Real good discussion on use of IR imaging by Dr Mousa Diabat from NV5 today. This was the first of their focused webinars. The slide is showing water temps in a stream particularly highlighting colder water fed from submerged springs (www.nv5geospatialsoftware.com/Company/Events/Geo-Sessions)
A presentation slide with two graphics on it. The slide is titled longitudinal temperature profile. The first graphic shows a stream bed flowing from top to bottom, mostly in shades of yellow, except an area on the right edge with darker reds and blues representing colder waters. The second graphic shows a stream bed, mostly in red with several small dark dots circled in blue representing locations of spring water entering the river channel. An artificial centerline has been added, showing average temperatures at intervals along the line.

Learning something new in Pro every day. Today I discovered they put in hot keys to rotate the entire map, and not something safe like “control+a”, just “a”. Then between trying to figure out WTF was going on and a shit load of googling I finally found the options to turn that crap off.

I don’t know why I let the fact that ArcGIS Online can’t handle annotation layers get to me when as far as I can tell, AGOL can’t even rotate a F-ing text label. Come on Jack! This is basic mapping. Hell, you did it fine with ArcIMS, and AGOL is supposed to be better than ArcIMS! Am I right?

This map/nautical chart of Lake Michigan was on the wall of our hotel this weekend in Kenosha, Wisconsin. It was fun comparing how it looked back in 1903(?) to today. More businesses should decorate their walls with old maps.
A very large map/nautical chart combo on display on the wall in a hallway.

Sooo how many years has ArcGIS Online been a thing & as far as I can tell, it still cannot deal with Annotation layers? The only thing popping up in google, is questions about when it’s coming WTH Jack? Maybe stop pushing boundaries until your base product works as expected #EsriUC #ArcGISOnline

So it looks like ESRI has no easy way to push a feature class from an SDE database up to AGOL without jumping through a bunch of holes to process and export it to another format first. For fuck sake, they made it easy to upload directly from a Shapefile but not a real geodatabase. 🤬
