Lots of commentary on this piece already, all of which I agree with. For historians, research is a fundamental part of writing. To farm it out to AI changes the nature of this intellectual process in fundamental ways. And as Stacy Schiff points out, it also takes all the fun out of it.

ON TOP of the ethical reasons to not use AI, it's also 1) bad at what it does 2) literally makes you stupider 3) has HUGE environmental costs: every search is equivalent to pouring out an entire bottle of water. It's not worth it to generate a cutesy emoji or have it write an error-riddled draft.

Seriously, FUCK Boundless. Writers, do not publish with them. Agents, do not submit to them. Bookstores, do not carry their books. Any company that thinks torching this many authors will result in being able to “continue publishing and rebuild trust” is delusional and deserves to die.

All genuine historical work is revisionist. It revises what we thought we knew, with new evidence & new interpretations, in the present, for the present, respecting the reality of the past AND the multiple things it can be made to say. Everything else is self-interested myth-making.

I'm really enjoying Helen Castor's The Eagle and The Hart. I wanted to read it for John Talbot's origin story, but it has the bonus of rehabilitating Henry IV in my mind and introducing the fascinatingly peculiar character of Richard II. One could write a good novel about a man like that.

I'm in a book group and people are noping out of Revolutionary Road 7 pages in because Frank Wheeler's view of April must also be Richard Yates' view. I'm so confused. Do we not credit authors with, like... trying to do a thing? Could it be that an author may be critical of the POV they represent?

This is a prayer roll made c1445 for Margaret, Queen to Henry VI. Long considered a conventional object of feminine piety, the roll was, as I reveal here, a public show of a queen’s function in a royal regime: to soften the king’s image so he cd maintain the veneer of strength. tinyurl.com/5cb2z5kk
This is a detail from the top of a long parchment Christian prayer roll. At the top of this object is a large circle that I only show in part here which features a series of prayers to the Virgin Mary. Beneath it, we see Margaret of Anju kneeling before a desk with a prayer book open up upon it to the right two angels kneel while holding up her coat of arms.

Between 1927 & 1933 four nuns at Eibingen Abbey replicated by hand the renowned manuscript of Hildegard von Bingen’s magnum opus, Scivias. When the original 12C manuscript disappeared after WWII, the replica became a facsimile-original. I tell the story of that facsimile here tinyurl.com/3mcb6vt7
Hildegard von Bingen's Scivias in Weimar
Germany: Media Theory by Hand
Sonja Drimmer
Abstract Between 1929 and 1930 a feud over the legitimacy of reproductions of works of art erupted in the pages of the culture periodical Der Kreis. Later dubbed the Hamburg Facsimile Debate, the dispute involved many of the day's most eminent curators and academics in art and art history and became a focal point for emerging ideas about authenticity and the educative impact of the replica in the Weimar Republic. Even as the intelligentsia were publicly quarreling over the epistemological stakes of the facsimile, four nuns at Eibingen Abbey were meticulously hand-copying the most renowned illuminated twelfth-century manuscript of Hildegard von Bingen's visionary summa, Scivias. This essay pits the Facsimile Debate against the facsimile craft of the Eibingen nuns, situating both within the context of new reproductive technologies devised specifically for representing medieval artifacts. It argues for a historicizing approach to the notion of authenticity, which bears on how we think about mediation and the surrogate in our research and teaching today.
