I legitimately didn't know they were competing with Steam and it's crazy to me that they burnt so much money on what sounds like something with very little (or wildly misguided) market research.

Ethan Evans, former Amazon VP

As VP of Prime Gaming at Amazon, we failed multiple times to disrupt the game platform Steam. We were at least 250x bigger, and we tried everything. But ultimately, Goliath lost. Here's why:

The 15+ year long attempt to challenge Steam started before I was VP of Prime Gaming, but we never cracked the code. Not under my leadership or anyone else's.

The first way we tried to enter the online-game-store market was through acquisition. We acquired Reflexive Entertainment (a small PC game store) and tried to scale it. It went nowhere.

Then, after buying Twitch, we created our own PC games store. Our assumption was that gamers would naturally buy from us because they were already using Twitch. Wrong.

Finally, we built "Luna," a game streaming service that let people play without a high-end PC. Around the same time, Google tried the same thing with their
product "Stadia." Neither gained significant traction. The whole time, Steam dominated despite being a relatively small company (compared to Amazon and Google).

The mistake was that we underestimated what made consumers use Steam

It was a store, a social network, a library, and a trophy case all in one. And it worked well.

At Amazon, we assumed that size and visibility would be enough to attract customers, but we underestimated the power of existing user habits We never validated our core assumptions before investing heavily in solutions. The truth is that gamers already had the solution to their problems and they weren't going to switch platforms just because a new one was available

We needed to build something dramatically better, but we failed to do so. And we needed to validate our assumptions about our customers before starting to build. But we never really did that either.

Just because you are big enough to build something doesn't mean people will use it

to most people, creativity in of itself has no reward. it's all grind, and usually capped off by burn out, what's the point. capitalism validates that belief. so why not just outsource the process and just get to the part they need and that's horrifying, tragic, and deeply angering all at once

This one's maybe a little on the ling side, but trust me, it's worth it. I've cried reading it multiple times. (1/3)

mylordshesacactus

Carpathia received Titanic's distress signal at 12:20am, April 15th, 1912. She was 58 miles away, a distance that absolutely could not be covered in less than four hours.

(Californian's exact position at the time is... controversial. She was close enough to have helped. By all accounts she was close enough to see Titanic's distress rockets. It's uncertain to this day why her crew did not respond, or how many might not have been lost if she had been there. This is not the place for what-ifs. This is about what was done.)

Carpathia's Captain Rostron had, yes, rolled out of bed instantly when woken by his radio operator, ordered his ship to Titanic's aid and confirmed the signal before he was fully dressed. The man had never in his life responded to an emergency call. His goal tonight was to make sure nobody who heard that fact would ever believe it.

All of Carpathia's lifeboats were swung out ready for deployment. Oil was set up to be poured off the side of the ship in case the sea turned choppy; oil would coat and calm the water near Carpathia if that happened, making it safer for lifeboats to draw up alongside her.

He ordered lights to be rigged along the side of the ship so survivors could see it better, and had nets and ladders rigged along her sides ready to be dropped when they arrived, in order to let as many survivors as possible climb aboard at once.

I don't know if his making provisions for there still being survivors in the water was optimism or not. I think he knew they were never going to get there in time for that. I think he did it anyway because, god, you have to hope.

Carpathia had three dining rooms, which were immediately converted into triage and first aid stations. Each had a doctor assigned to it. Hot soup, coffee, and tea were prepared in bulk in each dining room, and blankets and warm clothes were collected to be ready to hand out.

By this time, many of the passengers were awake-prepping a ship for disaster relief isn't quiet-and all of them stepped up to help, many donating their own clothes and blankets.

And then he did something I tend to refer to as diverting all power from life support.

Here's the thing about steamships: They run on steam. Shocking, I know; but that steam powers everything on the ship, and right now, Carpathia needed power. So Rostron turned off hot water and central heating, which bled valuable steam power, to everywhere but the dining rooms-which, of course, were being used to make hot drinks and receive survivors.

He woke up all the engineers, all the stokers and firemen, diverted all that steam back into the engines, and asked his ship to go as fast as she possibly could. And when she'd done that, he asked her to go faster.

I need you to understand that you simply can't push a ship very far past its top speed. Pushing that much sheer tonnage through the water becomes harder with each extra knot past the speed it was designed for. Pushing a ship past its rated speed is not only reckless-it's difficult to maneuver-but it puts an incredible amount of strain on the engines. Ships are not designed to exceed their top speed by even one knot. They can't do it. It can't be done.

Carpathia's absolute do-or-die, the-engines-can't-take-this-forever top speed was fourteen knots. Dodging icebergs, in the dark and the cold, surrounded by mist, she sustained a speed of almost seventeen and a half.

No one would have asked this of them. It wasn't expected. They were almost sixty miles away, with icebergs in their path. They had a responsibility to respond; they did not have a responsibility to do the impossible and do it well. No one would have faulted them for taking more time to confirm the severity of the issue. No one would have blamed them for a slow and cautious approach. No one but themselves.

Leave the Crypt (2/2) Thanks for reading!

Panel 3
The mummy begins taking off bandages off its face, revealing a determined, living human with tired eyes and black hair. It's other hand is gripping the handle of the sword.
"But everyday, I see friends and strangers keep going. So I get up too."

Panel 4
The mummy pulls the sword out of the hole in its chest as it fully sits up.
"Even though it's hard. I see change on the horizon. I see hope in those who get up."

Panel 5
Ink drawing of the mummy's feet. The mummy is now sitting on the edge of it's bed, about to stand.
"So, even if it feels hollow at times..."

Panel 6
Mummy is standing at a doorway, silhouette by light. Hair and wrapping blow in the wind. It grips the sword that had pierced it down.
"I'll keep getting up. I'll keep working on what I can. I'll keep striving for the change I want to see and the hope thay should be there."

#makeaterriblecomicday2025 Leave the Crypt (1/2) I had initially planned on doing something lighthearted from the other day, but this felt relevant...

Panel 1
Ink drawing of a mummy with a hole through its chest and a sword piercing the hole.
"I've been Going through it. I think we all have. Overwhelmingly so."

Panel 2
Ink drawing of mummy sitting up, the sword is still going through the hole in its chest.
"Its been hard to get up in the morning sometimes, especially when daily stuff like Work and Bills has started feeling...hollow. Compared to everything else.

My family and I went to see my art teachers sculpture today: Pointing the Way to The Future. It replaced a Columbus monument. It was made both as a tribute to Italian Americans, but also immigrant families in general. Kind of important to remember this day and age especially.

A photo of a bronze sculpture in a green park, representing an Italian family first arriving in the US. the father is holding his son. The mother is holding his arm. And their daughter is clutching a book as they all gaze out in the distance. They are clearly immigrants, carrying luggage with their Ellis Island tags around their necks.
