So fed up of hearing politicians talking about people being out of work and on benefits due to 'low level anxiety' & they NEVER have the numbers to hand. As I understand it, it's really difficult to get out of work benefits. #BBCLauraK

I know it's complicated and everyone will have their own reasons for supporting or opposing the bill currently before Parliament, but whatever your beliefs, surely we'd all wish to be able to end our lives as H did, comfortable, in his own home & surrounded by family. #AssistedDying

Then sat down in his TV chair, drank an 'infusion with the medication', smiled at his family one last time, then closed his eyes and fell asleep forever.

This week, we received the news that H had died by assisted suicide. His daughter told us about his last day. He had breakfast, did his usual exercises, swam in his pool.

In July, H celebrated his 101st birthday, still living in the house that we visited often when I was younger. When Dad rang to congratulate him, H told him that he'd been diagnosed with mouth cancer.

H loved Scotland and the Scots language. When I spoke to him last by phone about a year ago, he was still sharp as a tack & took great delight in reciting the Selkirk Grace.

By all accounts, my gran was like a mother to him, and the families stayed in touch when he was eventually able to return to Germany.

Once the war was over, it took several years, I believe, before the prisoners were able to return home. H was one of the prisoners who came to work on my grandparents' smallholding.

H was just a teenager when he was conscripted by the Nazis, not too long before the end of WWII. He was captured shortly afterwards and sent to a POW camp near my grandparents' home in Scotland.
