A late friend of mine taught science in an old school in England but was also appointed Librarian (no qualifications required). She culled an enormous amount as "dross", including much of the personal library a novelist of some repute bequeathed to her old school. No experts consulted.

Lots of people use "sewist" to avoid the implications of "sewer". It never feels right to say it aloud (while "sewer" is quite distinct from the homonym of excretion.) I just say "I sew" much of the time.

Indeed. People did not go to the cities in the early Industrial Revolution because they'd had enough of an idyll. Awful though factory conditions could be, they beat casual agricultural labour and living conditions in enough ways to make the difference.
