Ugh, you reminded me now of a family tragedy. My husband’s cousin had a daughter with an inoperable brain tumor, at 8 years old. At some point they just told the doctors no more testing. Her days were numbered, they wanted to spend what time they had making her happy, not waiting in hospitals.

I could tell the medical student I was talking to was frustrated by my willingness to remain in the dark about what exactly was killing my cat. But it was clear the cat was dying anyway, and the biopsy itself would have been more invasive than I was open to. It was time for palliative care.

It was either cancer, and he was too frail to undergo cancer therapies; or an internal injury that required surgery, ditto, he’d had multiple surgeries at that point and it was brutal; or it was an infection that required antibiotics. I said let’s just give him antibiotics and hope for the best.

I appreciate this approach of the dentist’s. Our previous cat had a bunch of medical issues in the 3 years leading to his death. In one of the last rounds, the veterinary hospital wanted to do a biopsy to explore something in his stomach. In conversation with them, I realized I didn’t want to know.>

It took me a moment to grasp what I was seeing: at first sight I thought it was maybe water reflecting something with maybe a ripple effect going through it. I guess that’s what the combined shape of the (non)trees and blue of the underlying fabric looks like to my non-reasoning eyes.

They can be so clever. Our cat Tamago RIP had some kind of agreement with the dog Sheba RIP, who would usually snitch on him when he misbehaved, but not if he bribed her with scraps from the garbage. And one of our current cats, Unagi, is a master burglar who can circumvent unbelievable hurdles.
