Redlining’s modern successor are algorithms that charge Black and Latino borrowers more for a mortgage, even at the same risk level as their white counterparts. Left unchecked, AI won't close the racial wealth gap—it'll widen it. Here's the full report: bit.ly/4fMi3Xw
A hand pins a paper on a black background. The text reads: "Digital redlining works the same way as redlining, steering people of color into worse financial terms on mortgages. Algorithms are making similar judgments that are harder to see and even harder to challenge." The bottom right corner features a handle with "@civilrightsorg.The image contains text on a colorful, abstract background. The text reads: "Lending algorithms predict who's least likely to shop around for a better rate—often first-time or first-generation homeowners. The algorithm charges them higher prices." The bottom right corner includes the handle @civilrightsorg.A graphic presents text over an aerial view of houses. The text states that a UC Berkeley analysis of 7 million mortgages found Black and Latino borrowers paid significantly more in interest than white borrowers, even when credit scores were accounted for. The quote highlights hundreds of millions of dollars a year. The image includes a social media handle: @civilrightsorg.A set of keys is placed on a dark surface. Text on the image reads, "Lenders must prove their systems don't discriminate—not just promise they don't." The handle "@civilrightsorg" is in the corner.
