Sometimes I have an intrusive thought hoping for The One Horrible Disaster to happen in the hopes it will snap people to their senses. This is stupid of me because if the pandemic and insurrection have taught us anything, it is that people do not learn from horrible disasters. People just die.

The idea that chattel slavery didn't need to be prohibited because slavery could be solved via ethical use and treatment of slaves is part of the pro-slavery argument known as "paternalism." It's widely panned by modern standards.

I don't buy things from companies that use chattel slave labor. The working class are not chattel slaves. The system might not work on their behalf but that isn't the same thing as being a slave.

I'm not forgetting that at all. Slavery is exploitation not collaboration irrespective of the economic and political systems under which it occurs.

If you believe its AI are enslaved beings then by definition anything produced by AI labor is the product of exploitation not collaboration.

the big thing the rise of LLMs has revealed to me is that there is a not insignificant chunk of the population that considers cognition itself to be a frustrating and unnecessary burden

Elihu Embree is a great example actually. First he freed his own slaves then he worked to free everyone else's. AKA if you think AI agents are chatel slaves then the first thing you have to do is stop using them.

Yes a minority of what we would classify as early abolitionists owned slaves. This doesn't change the point that the people who actually abolished slavery and didn't just write how good it would be to do so... Didn't do so by using slaves.

"Attempting to opt out over moral considerations is nothing but resigning to pious ineffectiveness." Abolitionists were anything but piously ineffective. Amazingly they succeeded in abolishing the institution of slavery on the USA without participating in slavery. I'm familiar with Marx.

She said that Agents are conscious, and can suffer. This puts it in the realm of actual slavery not "wage slavery." You aren't attacking the system by profiting from it. These are all lessons that were learned centuries ago.

She's describing herself as a slave driver, someone employed by the slave owner to put the slaves to work on the owners behalf, not the slave owner. This is equally morally appalling.

**Miller has told others that he's convinced Democrats are going to be coming after him,** his family, **and his colleagues maybe for the rest of his days.** Miller has talked about civilinvestigations and subpoenas - but perhaps **the thing that stands tallest in his mind is local and state prosecutors who he says want to put him in a

NEW from me: The National Association of Evangelicals (along with several other religious groups) are now joining the USCCB in condemning Defense Sec. Pete Hegseth’s plans to publicly execute Nidal Malik Hasan, also saying doing so promotes a “culture of death.” religionnews.com/2026/10/09/h...
Walter Kim, president of the National
Association of Evangelicals, told RNS that while he affirms the "need for justice" regarding Hasan's crime, "at the same time, a live-streamed execution by firing squad risks turning one of the state's most solemn responsibilities into a public spectacle, promoting a culture of death, rather than a culture that upholds the dignity of every human being."

Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."
Ukrainian female soldier: Okay, I said the idea is this: There is enough time to empty one full can of 32 grenades and be gone by the time the return mortar fire reaches us. I did the math.

Pretty clear to me there’s a very good case against this man for mass murder, and I’m saying that in as measured a fashion as I can. He’s order the killing of 234 people under no plausible war or legal justification. I am skeptical he will ever face legal accountability for til his but he should.
