Also, people just showing up at your door expecting coffee and company is just plain rude...

Yeah, this feel very "overthinking it". I think some Ye Olde Hosting was driven by "do it or they'll speak ill of you in the village" and it's great that those that don't enjoy it don't have to. For us that do: chill, run a cloth over the bathroom, sweep the floor. Your friends won't mind the rest

It would seem the Home Office has now acquired the ability to impose, without visibility or accountability, shadow bans on students coming to British universities from particular countries. How? Because of the interaction between indiv visa decisions (made by HO alone) and visa rules for unis 1/?

It was a similar confusion I had about the farmers IHT thing. If your farm is proudly a family farm and you want your kids to take over and the kids agree.. why not transfer the ownership now and start the 7 year timer to make IHT a moot point? Why is it imperative that you hang onto it until death?

This makes good sense I think. And seems something that could be done with minimal political (and by virtue of what it is, no economic) pain.

This leaves out several nuances, including how it interacts with tax. Take DK as an example. It does not have a tax floor like UK. So that 25K £ will post-tax be about 17.5K £. UK amount is not taxed*. So yes, DK is more, but you cannot compare these numbers directly * assuming no other income

Denmark has quite a similar health system to the NHS so health cost will be similar. Ignoring other pensions available, the unadjusted basic state pension is ~11.300 gbp/year. By comparison the UK state pension unadjusted is 12547 £/year (241 £/week). So yeah, seems pretty average to me. 2/2

I saw a similar chart the other day and it raised an eyebrow of the "that doesn't seem right" kind to me. My country of origin is Denmark, which has cropped up as a favourable comparison in UK media as well, so with the caveat that a single datapoint hastily found is not statistics: 1/2

Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics. A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

There's been some chat about the lack of vision briefings from some parts of the party. Is this maybe a function of not having a clear idea of what their voter base is? As in not thinking about _who_ they are rather than which constituencies they may live in, where they clearly have a list in mind.

I can also recommend the cookbook. The recipes are a bit advanced in the spice department, so requires a bit of shopping around, but they explain the howtos well, and half the book is just a lovely tour of Bombay in bookform that makes we want to go and eat there www.dishoom.com/store/produc...

Ofc being able to run around in a world from books I had spent hours reading at the library helped. Had I been a bit younger there is a decent chance my early formative game experiences would have been a FPS and probably my steam library would look very different than the one in this reality.

In the sense that it steered me into a genre, I'd have to go with the old GoldBox "Death Knights of Krynn". That you can have an AD&D experience without having to gather a gang of friends and that a story can carry over between games was astonishing, and probably is why I like RPGs to this day.

I second this. I have made it exactly once and with the usual apprehension I have around pastry, and it came out great. Turns out I needn't worry. Hot water pastry is, in my experience, pretty easy to work with. Only flaw was I had it slightly too thick, but that's on me, not the pastry.

What on earth is happening?
This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.

Call me old fashioned, but if you have in fact not heard it, I don't think "we have heard it" is the right response. And it's hardly advanced politics to realise that you should know what something is about before expressing public support.

But if it is a boilerplate answer because she didn't know the story (which I can believe, since she doesn't seem to do her job much), why not not spend 5 minutes looking up what you are being asked about (or have an aide provide you a recap)? I can't see how it is worth going to bat for her here.

I caught myself falling prey to this myself with the new Starcraft game. I don't really give a toss about RTS, so when it wasn't SC3 I was intrigued. And I remember thinking "Oh, I though it was only a future release reveal, but if there's a trailer, maybe it's.... ah, 2030. Nevermind"

GhostLad @ghostlad.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
I wonder if there's a sort of mistaken understanding from many gamers that "if press release, then release not soon. if trailer, then release soon". Once you show parts, even in trailer form, it's thought that you have nailed down the visual language and so are surely* getting close * not at all

Most of my family is not very online and they are concerned about it on a "not sure what is true" level. And I don't really see my nieces and nephews (teenagers and above) sharing slop on their socials, at least the ones I am on. I wonder if to them is is just an evolution on "spot the photoshop".

It's that time of year again: annual elections of Council Members for the magnificent National Trust. Should you wish to vote for the Nomination Committee's recommended candidates, they are on page 18 of your booklet. 'Restore' and 'Reclaim' are again in the fray. Votes are due in by 30 October.

I mean, probably would have had a Reformation given the rest of Europe exists? It's quite impossible to know. I was just pointing out that on the question of "what would the church develop like if the vikings were in charge for 1000 years?", there is scant evidence for "less powerful and nicer".

Not being in communion may sound like a religious point, but for many communities around the country at the time, it effectively amounted to being shunned.

GhostLad @ghostlad.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
F.inst. Confirmation was reintroduced in 1733 and up until the constitution was changed in 1849 it was a requirement to have any civil rights. Not confirmed people could f.inst. not marry or accept positions of work. You were also denied participation in communion.

Having grown up in one of the countries that grew out of the vikings, the claim about the church certainly doesn't ring true. There was a lot of religious control of society in the immediate aftermath of christendom, as well as in the aftermath of the Reformation out of fear of a Catholic rebound.

Apparently organising black shirts to block key infrastructure, target the RNLI, attack police etc is not enough for anyone in power to act urgently. Begs the awful question as to what would it take for anyone to condemn this, never mind act.
