Not all fruits and vegetables are equal when it comes to heart health, our research shows
Choosing fruits and vegetables more carefully could help us better get important bioactives from our foods.

🚨 New study: "5-a-day" fruit & veg often falls short for heart-protective flavanols (~500 mg/day from COSMOS trial). Fewer than 1 in 4 people hitting guidelines actually reach it. Boost with berries, plums or green tea. pubs.rsc.org/en/content/a... #HeartHealth #Nutrition

Adhering to dietary guidelines does not yield flavanol intake levels associated with beneficial cardiovascular effects
Outcomes from the COSMOS trial have reinforced the notion of flavanols as important plant-derived bioactives contributing to cardiovascular health. As discussions continue on whether specific dietary ...

Five-a-day did not guarantee enough flavanols linked to lower risk of dying from heart disease. In more than 30,000 diets, fewer than 1 in 5 people reached that level. doi.org/hb62wr

Some fruits and vegetables are especially good for heart health
Including blueberries, plums, blackberries, broad beans or cherries (washed down with green tea) in your recommended five-a-day (five 80g portions of fruit and vegetables, recommended by the UK's NHS) may be the best way to a healthier heart, new research suggests.

We don't know that ultra-processed foods are bad for us. Some studies even show they might help weight loss.

The food industry reformulated foods - because public health experts wanted less fat and less sugars, but consumers wanted to eat something that did not resemble cardboard. That's bad, says Professor van Tulleken:

Flavanols should be used for cardiovascular prevention - because they can reduce blood pressure and improve vascular function. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40126033/

There have been many discussions about NOVA - mainly about the fact that it is simply not fit for purpose by combining foods like infant formula, soft drinks, coco-pops and fish fingers in the same category. Why not join and shape the effort? Everyone interested in public health should do so.

🍽️ What did you eat yesterday? Breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner—do you remember everything? How about the portion sizes? Was that cucumber sandwich 100g or 150g? This might seem like trivia, but for nutrition research, it’s a HUGE challenge. Here's why 👇 open.substack.com/pub/ggck2/p/...

Really interested in improving health? Ignore processing and simply eat more flavanols. In contrast to processing, there's overwhelming scientific consensus that they are beneficial - and even an RCT showing a reduction in disease risk (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35294962/). And it's easy and cheap!
This figure from the COSMOS study illustrates cumulative incidence curves comparing cardiovascular death (CVD Death) between participants consuming 500 mg/day of flavanols (cocoa extract group, shown in red) and those receiving a placebo (shown in black) over a follow-up period of four years since randomization. The hazard ratio (HR) for cardiovascular death in the cocoa extract group compared to the placebo group is 0.73 (95% confidence interval: 0.54–0.98), indicating a 27% reduction in risk associated with flavanol consumption. The red curve shows consistently lower cumulative incidence than the black curve, suggesting a potential protective effect of flavanols.

The problem of the #UPF crowd: they don't want food to be cheap, they want it to be expensive. An industrial lemon cake with a 4-day shelf-life would be incredibly expensive. (And none of the ingredients in the industrial one harm health.)

I’m a dietitian…. - I eat chocolate most days. - I can’t tell you my macros or how many calories I eat. - I rely on ultra processed foods like shop bought bread and cereal bars. - We sometimes have a quick meal like a bought stuffed pasta with a sauce. - I drink wine. Life is about balance.

Funny: @erictopol.bsky.social promotes ultra-processed food and now suddenly warns against the same (based on the press-release - the paper doesn't mention diet at all)
