If you are creating a fantasy species or a fantasy race, please, please, please, make it clear how to make the name plural. For example, if I said there was a rose-viola hybrid flower called a riola, is it a bouquet of riolas? Or a bouquet of riola? #AmEditing

Authors, please remember that hiring a firm or individual based solely on the speed with which they claim they'll get something done can be risky. It's okay to give professionals the time they need to give you the most bang for your buck. It's rare for things to go well when you rush. ⏩ #BookSky

Just sent a previous client a referral fee for sending another author our way. 🏆Previous client was happy enough to recommend us. 🏆New client partners with us. 🏆The referring client gets some cash as a show of gratitude for supporting this small, Black-owned business. Win-win-win! ♥

#StetSprint | Whenever you can, I highly recommend getting paid for your work before you start doing it. If someone asks me for an invoice, that's because they are ready to pay it and *THEN* send me their manuscript. No follow-up needed because I'm chilling out until I get paid to do otherwise. ✅

#StetSprint | The wielding of humor is one skill I've never picked up, unfortunately. I so admire people who have that talent (making stand-up comedians near-deities, in my eyes! :D). I seem to be able to stumble into making people laugh accidentally from time to time, but that's as far as it goes.

Looking for solid editors for your project becomes a bit easier if you understand that there are multiple kinds of editing (developmental, line, copy, etc.). Shouting into the social media void that you want "a book editor” is vague enough to attract a lot of scammers. #BookSky #AuthorSky

So don't ignore your spam folder when you're searching for a message or deliverable that you've been waiting for. That said, if you don't end up seeing the email you want in an alternate folder, that would be the time to reach out to your pro so they can help you with troubleshooting. ♥

GetBookHelp.com: Helping new authors put their best book forward @getbookhelp.bsky.social · 19/09/2026

A file or message winding up in a place other than your inbox can happen for a number of reasons. In GBH's case, it's because we send out a larger volume of emails than the average user due to always managing multiple projects at any given moment on behalf of authors and businesses.

GetBookHelp.com: Helping new authors put their best book forward @getbookhelp.bsky.social · 19/09/2026

Writers, when you're working on documents and communicating via email, please check your alternate (spam, promotions, social, updates, etc.) folders prior to assuming that someone hasn't sent you something. #BookSky

Right! Some book coaching calls involve intensive planning for marketing stuff. Others are nothing more than body doubling for an ND author (they write while I write, so I'm essentially getting paid twice!). It's a custom experience based on the author, but never going outside of my own boundaries.

#StetChat | A7: This happens a handful of times each year. I contact them to get a better idea of what they're looking for (if needed) and then connect them with folks in my professional circle or send them to @efafreelancers.bsky.social to find someone.

#StetChat | As a former clinician, even therapists I worked alongside would sometimes try to take responsibility for what clients did/didn't do. They are a whole other human being. We can't force them to do anything. Even trying to sounds exhausting, so I just don't. Makes like SO MUCH easier. ♥

#StetChat | A4: All my services are pre-paid, so if that's all they want to do, that's on them. I enjoy chatting with writers about writing. Getting paid to do it is just a bonus. ♥

GetBookHelp.com: Helping new authors put their best book forward @getbookhelp.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

#StetChat | A3.2: I've seen professionals go practically feral on writers before and I can understand the fear of disclosure in that case. Education and underscoring the benefits of transparency would be a key part of that conversation.

#StetChat | A3: More clear comms! Show them where I'm getting the signs of AI use, educate them on the risks, and move forward based on their response. If we've been working together for years, the best I can come up with is they were just afraid of my response.

GetBookHelp.com: Helping new authors put their best book forward @getbookhelp.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

#StetChat | A2: I'm not sure how this would happen since I would've told them why I wasn't a good fit in the first place. But, I'd just tell them at that point then.

GetBookHelp.com: Helping new authors put their best book forward @getbookhelp.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

#StetChat | A1: Just clear communication on this one. Once I've given notice about what I've found, it's up to the author / publisher how they want to proceed with their own project.

Thanks for commenting, @skyladachi.bsky.social! These notes may clear up your confusion. Remember that some folks are hiring because they don't want to learn how to be an editor and think someone with concrete skills and more experience will do a better job.

We offer this level of flexibility automatically, but not everyone does. So if you've found an editor who you really want to work with, it doesn't hurt to at least present them with the offer. Closed mouths don't get fed! ♥
