more little guys for that creature escorting/research thing i started a while ago. these are early or "safe" area critters. loose typings for these babies are, starting at the upper left: branch type, hive type, net type (siren type?), bone type, seed type, beyond type, and endless type.

here's this week's #Paleostream flocking sketches!! this week we sketched Yoshi, Tylosaurus (most of us drew Tylosaurus rex), Xianshou (mine is inside a speculative Weltrichia sp.), and Argyrolagus
during the morning, a Yoshi wakes and starts to yawn

Yoshi is a genus of sabre-tooth cat named after Nikolai Spassov's (one of two coauthors that described the genus) cat of the same name from potentially across Late Miocene, Eurasia. it appeared similar to a small big cat of today, but had large canines that would've most likely been covered by lips when its mouth was closeda Tylosaurus rex has successfully taken down a very large Xiphactinus, two Niobrara attempt to take some scraps from the large marine reptile's catch

Tylosaurus rex is a recently described species of Tylosaurus that was the largest marine reptile found to date. it's holotype is from the Early Campanian Texas, USA. Tylosaurus is famous for its lack of teeth at the very front of its snout creating a 'knob' of sorts, hence the name "knob lizard". the largest specimen is 14m long.

Xiphactinus is a large predatory fish that looked like no other fish today with a thin and tall body, and a short stout head like a bulldog, the longest specimens are around 6m long

Niobrara is a fish with very large dorsal and anal finsa Xianshou is awoken by the sudden flash of a camera, the small mammaliform hisses and bears its teeth from the cup of a large Weltrichia. some of the centripetal rays to the bottom left are damaged, most likely from when the small animal crawled into the central cup.

Xianshou is a mammaliform (ancestors of mammals) from the Late Jurassic of Liaoning, China. it wouldve appeared similar to rodents but with different teeth and not visible ears as their ear structure was different to mammals. Xianshou and its relatives may have possessed a patagium (skin flap) between their arms and legs used for gliding like flying squirrels and sugar gliders, here i reconstruct it with one.

Weltrichia is a form genus of williamsoniacean (an extinct group of plants with uncertain relation to other plants, however, most consider them gymnosperms; relatives of cycads, pines, and Ginkgo) pollen cone (male organ), or 'flower' - though they are not angiosperms. they are associated with the ovulate cone (female organ) form genus Williamsonia, while Williamsonia is known from the area Xianshou is from, no Weltrichia species is known. here i have reconstructed a large speculative species for the purposes of the composition.two Argyrolagus scuffel in a clearing at night, an artificial light from behind the camera illuminates the fighting fuzzy foes

Argyrolagus is a metatherian (mammal group which contains all mammals closer related to marsupials than placentals) of uncertain placement within the clade from the Early Pliocene of Patagonia, Argentina. they wouldve appeared similar to small hopping mammals but with a long snout, they also only possessed two toes on their feet

Today's four random pieces of palaeoart: Jan Sovák's Alxasaurus, Mark Hallett's Saurolophus, John Francis' Triceratops, and Wayne Barlowe's Pachyrhinosaurus!
A greenish, black and yellow-streaked Alxasaurus, a long-armed therizinosaurid dinosaur, stands ankle-deep in a flowing woodland stream. Two portraits of Saurolophus, one with wrinkled pink skin atop its crest, and another with the skin inflated into a bladder-like sac. A green-tinged Triceratops sleeps beneath leafy fronds, blending in with several large surrounding stones. Two Pachyrhinosaurus with taut, muscular frames wrestle atop a stony river. In the distance, a huge snow-topped mountain pierces a clear sky. Conifer trees crowd around its base.

I'm so pleased I can finally share my Antarctic Imperial Cormorant illustration for #PolarLights! This was a bird I knew little about before, but I quickly fell in love with their incredible colors and how they contrast against the vivid blue & white of the Antarctic landscape. 🎨 #SciArt #BirdArt 🪶
Digital illustration showing an Antarctic Imperial Cormorant (Leucocarbo atriceps bransfieldensis) in the foreground, with multiple others in the more distant background. This sleek black and white bird has a vivid blue eyering and bright orange caruncle over the bill during the breeding season. Its stout hooked bill is ideal for catching fish, and its slight shaggy crest is relaxed, not raised. The sky is a deep blue, reflected in the water, while the cormorants rest on and fly past blocks of ice, crumbling rocks, and a tall snowy mountain.

Adasaurus mongoliensis, a large dromaeosaurid dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous. A new illustration from me, created with Procreate and Photoshop. The soft tissue crest is speculative, as is the shape of the snout which was not preserved in the holotype fossil. #SciArt
A digital portrait of Adasaurus against a bluensky. The dinosaur has a long, snout with a few small teeth exposed, colourful pinkish skin around its eyes, and a ruff of fluffy, dark feathers around its neck. Its pale eye states intently ahead. A duplicate of the previous illustration, with the addition of a bloodied carcass in the foreground which the dinosaur is tearing strips of flesh from.

Been thinking marine-reptiley thoughts today. Here's one of my latest #paleoart efforts along that line: Tylosaurus proriger. The colour is based on fossil colour data, although it's far from certain that this animal was black and countershaded. Print link: www.markwitton.co.uk/product-page...
One of the most famous mosasaurs, Tylosaurus proriger, submerges after taking a breath. It is dark above and light below, as tentatively suggested by some palaeocolour data. The challenges of interpreting scaly reptile palaeocolour, and the tiny scraps of colour data we have for this animal, preclude much confidence in chromatic interpretations of this species, however.

Also, if you stare at this long enough, you'll see a few sharks. No foolin'.
