Random RPG thought: The best way to learn how to prep and run an RPG session, is by ACTUALLY running a game, instead of visualizing a session in your head and then trying to cover for all the ways in which you can imagine it failing until you get too anxious and convince yourself you're not ready
Character Commission for David Templin, in the "illuminated manuscript" style we used for LitM

Would it be too snarky to make a PSA-style video explaining why I don't answer rules on social media? I can go into the history of the pinned ruling threads on the 3.5e boards and arguments over conflicting rulings from different sources. Or I can just say: "Ask your GM!"

Fuck off. If anything is "millennial", it's those cool transparent colors our iMacs, Gameboys, and Tamagotchis came in. No fucking millennial likes the house flipper grey. Call it a millennial paint job when I can see through the exterior of a car because it's Glacier Purple like my GBA.
An image showing the colorful transparent plastic of various pieces of technology of the 90's and early 2000s, that were easily the popular choice of the millennial age bracket. Some of the tech is an iMac, Nintendo 64, Sega DreMcast, a PlayStation 2, a Gameboy color and Advance, and CD player.

@rdonoghue.bsky.social I would be super curious to hear your thoughts at some point on the new Cyper System Revised. It seems to give more freedom to players with their health and also codify more of the player choice track in creation and leveling.

Here is a hard thing to convince people of. If you had an awesome RPG session last night? YOU DID THAT. Not the game. Not the designers. Not the publishers. You. You were awesome. For many of us, that is SUPREMELY uncomfortable to even consider, and it’s easier to put the games pedestal.

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

I don't know if it'll make sense when I say it, but I think running Daggerheart will be useful to many GMs? As in, their initial struggles and eventual successes will help them to become more capable GMs, much better adapted to react to vibes and keep a session flowing and exciting.

Pre-ordering comics is INCREDIBLY important both for the buyer and the creators involved. For the customer it guarantees your shop will have a copy for you, and many shops ONLY order their pre-order amounts. For creators, it lets publishers know how much interest there is in firm numbers.
